A custom order can't go into production until someone knows exactly what to make. A detail the product page didn't collect becomes an email after the sale.
What size did you want? Can you send the file again? Is this the right crop?
Each question stops the order until the customer replies. Then someone still has to rebuild the design and retype the specs before anything gets made.
The fix is to move that work in front of checkout. In Appify Custom Product Options, the customer answers every question, designs the product, approves the proof and pays. The order arrives with print-ready files and a production spec already attached.
Where does the time go on a custom order?
Before anything gets printed or cut, a custom order can stall at any of these steps:
- Questions after the sale. A size, a color or a spelling the page never asked for.
- Files that won't print. A phone photo that looks fine on screen and turns soft at full size.
- Proofs by email. You send a mockup and the order sits until the customer answers.
- Rebuilding the design. Someone opens a design program and recreates what the customer described.
- Specs in the wrong place. Shopify's packing slip and staff order email leave custom selections off by default, so someone opens every order to read them.
1. Ask every question before checkout
A question the product page asks never becomes an email. Build the options the job actually needs: measurements, material, finish, quantity, an upload for artwork, a text box for the wording.
- Make the must-haves required. A required option has to be filled in before the customer can add to cart.
- Keep answers inside what you can make. Set a minimum and maximum on sizes, and cap a width by material with a Limit rule.
- Ask only what applies. Show if rules reveal a question only when it matters, like mounting hardware only for rigid signs.
- Control the upload. A file upload option sets the accepted file types, the maximum file size and how many files.
The price updates as they answer, so nobody waits on a quote either.
2. Let the customer approve the proof before they pay
Most options apps stop at a list of choices. Appify Custom Product Options also has a Product Designer: a full-screen editor where the customer lays out text, clipart and their own images on an artboard sized to the options they picked. Here's how to let customers design their own products from start to finish.
Turn on the design review workflow and saving becomes Edit, Review, Save. The customer sees the product preview and your review instructions. They have to tick I have reviewed and approve my design before the save button works.
- Required design. Mark the Product Designer option required, and nobody reaches the cart without a saved, approved design.
- No stale proofs. If they change a size after saving, the design is marked incomplete and they're asked to check it again. A proof at the wrong size never reaches your order.
- Both sides at once. Front and back designs save together for double-sided signs.
The proof step happens while the customer is still on your site. They approve their own design before they pay, so there's no mockup email to send and no reply to wait for.
3. Catch low-resolution images while the customer is still there
A blurry upload found after the sale means another email and another wait. Turn on low-resolution warnings and the editor checks each image against the print size as the customer works.
With a recommended resolution of 300 DPI, customers see a gentle caution between 150 and 299 DPI and a stronger warning below 150. They can swap in a better photo, or make it smaller, before they order.
Photo products get an image editor too. Customers crop, adjust and filter their upload, and can remove a background with AI when you allow it.
4. Get production files with every order
When the customer saves a design, the app builds the files you picked for that product:
- Proof PNG of the design as the customer approved it.
- Print-ready PNG with bleed, exported at the DPI you set (300 by default).
- Cut-line SVG for die-cut and kiss-cut jobs, from a preset shape or traced from the artwork.
- Production manifest listing each element's position and size, the customer's choices and the cut files.
All of it sits behind one Design Files link on the order line. If you turn on the comment button, the customer's special instructions arrive as Production Notes on the same order.
That's the morning where nobody retypes specs into Illustrator. For the formats print vendors expect, see what file formats print vendors need from custom orders.
5. Put the specs where your team works
The Orders tab in Appify Custom Product Options lists every order with a configured product. Search by order number, email or name, and filter by payment and fulfillment status.
Open an order and each line shows its options in a table, a proof thumbnail, and Open file links for uploads and design files. The list itself flags which orders have design files attached.
- Calculated values on the order. Cart properties can add a computed value, like the area in square feet, next to Size and Material.
- A SKU per configuration. Custom SKU rules build one from the choices, such as BLD-WD-36x48 for a wood blind.
- Specs on the packing slip. Two short template edits put every selection on your packing slips and the staff new-order email.
- Your language on the Orders page. When customers order in French, your team can switch the order view to your default language.
Which fix clears which delay?
| The delay | The fix in Appify Custom Product Options |
|---|---|
| "What size did you want?" | Required options, with limits on what can be entered |
| "Is this proof right?" | Design review with an approval checkbox before save |
| "Can you send a bigger photo?" | Low-resolution warnings in the editor |
| Rebuilding the design for print | Print-ready PNG, cut-line SVG and manifest on the order |
| Opening every order to read the specs | Orders tab, cart properties, SKUs and packing slips |
The second order should be faster than the first
Repeat customers shouldn't start over. Shopify's Buy again button adds the variant and drops the options. Appify Reorder brings the configuration back with the original choices filled in, and your staff can reorder a line straight from the Orders tab.
More on that in why Shopify's Buy again button drops custom options.
Where to start
Pull up the last ten emails you sent after a custom order. Sort them by the question they asked. Each one points to a fix above: a missing option, a proof step, a resolution warning or a file you had to make by hand.
Start with the most common one. Then compare the files your printer asks for with the outputs in our roundup of print-ready file apps.
FAQ
Why are my custom product orders taking so long to fulfill?
Check the steps before production: questions after the sale, proofs sent by email, low-quality uploads and designs rebuilt by hand. Collecting it all before checkout removes those steps.
Can Shopify generate print-ready files automatically?
Not on its own. The Product Designer in Appify Custom Product Options saves a print-ready PNG with bleed, a cut-line SVG and a production manifest with each design.
How do I show custom options on packing slips?
Shopify leaves them off by default. A short edit to the packing slip template prints every selection under each item.
Where do I find the files for an order?
Open the order in the app's Orders tab, or click the Design Files link on the Shopify order line. Every file for that design is in one place.
Approved, paid and ready for the press.
