AI-Assisted Setup for Shopify Product Options: What It Should Do (2026)

Can an app set up your custom product for you? A few Shopify apps now say yes.

You describe what you sell in plain English, and the AI builds the calculator. What matters is how much of the setup it really does, and whether it keeps helping after the first build.

In Appify Custom Product Options, Chat with AI builds the options, pricing, rules and styling from a description, a price sheet or a screenshot. It explains the math in plain English and fixes a wrong price with you.

It also handles the tedious jobs most people don't think to ask for: changing many options in one message, adding a whole set of options at once, and making images for your swatch choices. Below is what to check in any AI setup, and what each of those jobs looks like in practice.

What should AI-assisted setup actually do?

Run these questions against any app that says it has AI setup:

  • Does it build the whole calculator? Options are the easy part. Pricing, the rules between options and the look take most of the time.
  • Can it start from what you already have? Your price sheet or a screenshot of a calculator you like beats typing it all out again.
  • Does it do the tedious jobs? Changing the same setting on ten options, typing out long lists of choices, finding a picture for every swatch. That's where setup time really goes.
  • Can it explain what it built? You should be able to read every price in plain English.
  • Can it help when a price is wrong? Tell it the number you expected, and it should show you where the math went off.
  • Can you check and undo its work? Everything it builds should be editable by hand and easy to roll back.
  • Does it keep working after day one? Prices change. Asking for the change beats rebuilding.

What does Chat with AI build?

Appify Custom Product Options puts Chat with AI in a panel beside the editor, on every tab. You type what you sell, and the live preview updates as it works.

What you type, and what it builds

Here's an example. You type: "I make custom signs. Options: width (6 to 48 inches), height (6 to 36 inches), material (acrylic, wood, metal), mounting holes (yes/no). Price = width × height × material rate."

Chat with AI adds four options with the right field types, plus the pricing behind them. Then you keep going in the same thread: "Add a mounting-type dropdown with inside and outside options."

It builds far more than the option list:

  • Pricing: formulas, rate tables, quantity discounts, and the price beside each quantity choice.
  • Rules: "Hide Rush order unless Size is 2in or 3in." "When Size is Custom, set Quantity to 1."
  • Layout and look: steps for a long calculator, plus colors, borders and other styling.

Chat only reports a change once it's written into the calculator.

It starts from what you already have

The advanced jobs most people don't think to ask for

The first build is the part everyone pictures. The hours usually go into what comes after it. Chat with AI takes those jobs on too.

Change many options in one message

You don't have to open each option to change it. Say what should change, and chat updates every option it applies to:

  • "Make Width, Height and Material required."
  • "Show two decimal places on both measurements."
  • "Hide Rush order and Proof from the cart line."
  • "Add a bit of padding around the finish swatches."

It changes the options that are already there. It doesn't build new copies of them.

Add a whole set of options at once

One message to chat can add several options, like the four sign options above. For a longer list, use AI Bulk Generate. Click the sparkle icon in the Options toolbar and describe what you need:

"I need size (S/M/L/XL/XXL), color (10 popular colors as swatches), quantity, a text box for custom print text, and a file upload for artwork."

Click Generate and you get five options with the right types and the choices already filled in. Run it again for the next batch. New options land below the ones you have. The AI Bulk Generate guide has more examples.

Generate images for your swatch choices

Every swatch choice needs a picture, and most stores don't have a clean one for each. Ask chat to make them.

  • Approve the first one. It sets the style: the color, the fold, the lighting. The rest follow it, and each choice keeps its own shape.
  • Ask for a change. Describe it, and the next picture follows your words.
  • Start from a photo. Attach one and say "generate an image for Outside Mount similar to this." Chat uses it as a reference instead of placing it on the choice.
  • Mix in real photos. Attach several at once and say where each goes: "put these on Matte, Satin, and Gloss." Then ask for matching icons for the finishes you don't have photos of.

Set the fiddly settings by name

Chat knows most advanced settings by name, so you don't have to hunt through panels for them:

  • Selection limits: "let customers pick up to three add-ons."
  • Dates: a date format, or weekdays you don't deliver on.
  • Swatches: a hover preview, a carousel, or image padding.
  • The rest: popups, custom quantity entry, SKU fragments, and hiding an option from the storefront.

Write rules that read more than a choice

A rule can check which choice is picked. It can also read a text field ("if Notes mention rush"), a price variable ("when AREA is over 1000"), or compare against a formula ("Quantity is more than twice the Width").

Rules can fill in a value for the customer, too. Say "they can still change it" and chat fills it once. Otherwise the value stays locked while the rule applies.

Decide what shows on the cart line

Ask chat to hide or show options on the cart line, add a price variable like the square footage, and set the order they appear in. It can also send those details in the customer's language.

Will it explain the math?

Every calculated price runs on a formula. You don't have to write it or read it.

Describe a price, like "width times height times the rate per square foot, with a minimum order price", and Describe with AI writes the formula for you. Click Explain formula on any formula, including one someone else wrote, and you get a step-by-step answer like this:

If the Finish option is set to Matte, multiply the area by the Matte rate. Otherwise, multiply it by the standard rate.

What happens when a price looks wrong?

Tell Chat with AI which choices come out wrong, such as Large with rush, and the price you expected. It opens that formula's Troubleshoot tab, loads those choices into the preview, and fills in the price you expected.

The Troubleshoot tab shows what every part of the formula is worth for those choices. It names the likely issue and offers the fix, sometimes as a one-click button. Explain this result adds a plain-English write-up of the cause.

You can open it from the preview too. A Price looks wrong? link sits right under the preview price and opens the Troubleshoot tab for those exact choices.

Can you check and undo its work?

Everything the AI writes is fully editable by hand. Nothing goes live until you click Publish, and the preview switches between your draft and the published version.

Before a big change, save a checkpoint or restore any earlier version from the Versions dropdown.

Does it keep working after the first build?

Six months later, ask for a new price on a choice or a different default. Chat updates the option that's already there instead of building a new one.

The AI reaches past setup, too:

  • Translation: one click fills every missing translation, in every language you've added.
  • Styling: the AI Style Assistant turns "dark theme with rounded inputs" into a finished look, and refines it as you ask.

It's all on every plan. See more things to ask Chat with AI.

Where to start

Open Chat with AI on a new calculator and describe one product you sell. Then try the jobs above on it: change a few options in one message, add a batch, and ask for swatch icons.

You don't have to start from a blank page either. The app comes with free templates you can install and then ask chat to change for your products. For a walk-through of the chat itself, read build your Shopify product calculator faster with Chat with AI.
