A customer's wall is 12 feet 6 inches wide and 8 feet high. How much wallpaper is that, and what does it cost?
To sell custom wallpaper by wall size on Shopify, let the customer answer that on the product page. They enter the wall's width and height and pick a material. The page works out the area, the price and the number of panels as they type.
Then they see the pattern drawn at full size against the measurements they entered, with seams marked where the panels meet. Your order arrives with the measurements and a proof image, plus print-ready files when you turn them on.
Appify Custom Product Options does all of this in one app. Here's the math, the setup, and what the customer sees.
Why don't Shopify variants work for wallpaper?
Variants are fixed choices, like Matte or Satin. A wall can be any width and any height, so there's no list of sizes to create.
Without a calculator, the customer works out how many rolls they need on their own. Or you quote each wall by email, and they wait for a reply.
What math does a wallpaper order run on?
All prices here are made-up examples, in dollars. Take that 12 foot 6 inch wall, 8 feet high, in a traditional paste paper at 5.50 dollars a square foot, printed on 2 foot wide panels.
- Area: 12.5 × 8 = 100 square feet.
- Price: 100 × 5.50 = 550. In peel and stick at 6.50, it's 650.
- Panels: 12.5 ÷ 2 = 6.25, rounded up to 7 panels.
- Minimum price: say yours is 120. A 4 by 3 foot wall works out to 66, so it's charged 120.
The customer sees 550 and "You need 7 panels" before they add to cart. You get an order that already says how many panels to print.
Some shops charge per panel instead of per square foot. Then the price formula multiplies the panel count by your panel price.
How do you set up the pricing?
You don't have to start from a blank page. The app comes with a catalog of ready-made calculators, included at no extra cost, and one of them is a wallpaper sizing calculator. Open it in the preview, click Install to my store, and it arrives in your calculators as a draft. Then put in your own patterns, rates and panel widths, assign your products and publish.
Or describe how you price to Chat with AI and it builds the options, the formula and the rules. Either way, here is what goes in, so you know what you are adjusting.
1. Wall width and height
Use Length fields for width and height. Each can offer more than one unit, like feet and inches, and the calculator converts the entry before it prices it.
Set the smallest and largest wall you print, and customers can only enter sizes within that range.
In the app: Calculator Editor, Options & Pricing tab. Add an option, choose Length, and set the units, the minimum and the maximum.
2. Materials, each with its own rate
Show materials as image swatches, each carrying its own rate per square foot. Chat with AI can generate matching swatch icons if you don't have photos.
In the app: Same tab. Add an Image swatch option, then put each material's rate in its Values & Pricing row.
3. The formula
The formula multiplies the area by the material's rate. A round-up function counts the panels, and pricing variables keep each step readable, like AREA and PANELS.
If formulas aren't your thing, type "wall width times height, times the material rate, with a 120 minimum" and Describe with AI writes it. Explain formula turns any formula back into plain English.
In the app: Same tab, under Total Price Formula. This is where the price, the minimum and the maximum live.
A Calculation field can show "You need 7 panels" on the page. Add the panel count to the cart line under cart properties, and it's on the order too.
4. Pricing rules around it
- Minimum price: a price floor so small walls still cover your setup.
- Big-wall discount: a calculated discount can grow with the wall area.
- Large-format surcharge: a price adjustment adds a set amount once the area passes a size you choose.
- Fixed fees: flat or formula-driven, like a rush fee. Discounts never reduce them.
- Add-on products: link your existing products, like a paste or a smoothing tool. They go in the cart as normal Shopify products at their live price.
- SKU and weight: a custom SKU built from the material and size, and a shipping weight from its own formula.
In the app: All of these sit under Total Price Formula on the same tab, so the whole price is in one place. Publish when you are ready, and nothing reaches your store until you do.
What does the customer see before they buy?
Personalizers that put text or a photo on a product are common. A full design canvas built for wallpaper is not, and it's the part that sells a 550 dollar wall.
The Product Designer in Appify Custom Product Options draws the wall at the size the customer entered. The pattern is bound to that wall, so it keeps its real scale instead of stretching to fill the screen.
- The pattern repeats the way it prints. Choose a roll that repeats along the wall width, a grid of tiles, or no repeat for a mural.
- Seams show where they'll land. Show panels draws a line at every panel seam, based on the panel width you set.
- Rulers and a person for scale. A ruler in feet runs along the canvas, and a 5 foot 4 inch figure can stand beside the wall.
- The customer moves the pattern, not the wall. The wall stays the size they entered. They drag the pattern to choose what sits where.
- A scene for context. You can add a scene frame around the design. It never appears in the print files.
How the pattern sits on the wall
Three settings decide what the customer sees. You set them once per design.
- Panel width. The real width of one printed panel or roll. It draws the seam lines and the panel count comes from it. You never type a height, because the pattern keeps the shape of your image instead of stretching.
- How the pattern repeats. Along the wall for a roll, a grid of tiles, or no repeat for a mural. Roll wallpaper locks the pattern to the panel grid.
- Whether the customer can move it. Leave the placement free and they drag the pattern to choose what sits where, like the wall in the picture above. Lock it and the pattern stays where you put it. Roll wallpaper is always locked.
- Where the settings come from. Set them on each pattern swatch, or read them from the Shopify product, so every design carries its own pattern, repeat and panel width.
In the app: Calculator Editor, the Designer step. Bind the wall width and height to the artboard, bind the pattern under Product image, then add Show panels from the tools menu. Wallpaper and product image bindings has a copy-ready recipe for rolls, murals and patterns driven by the product.
The customer sees the design at full size against the measurements they entered, seams and all. A 550 dollar wall is an easier yes when they can see it first.
Murals and customer artwork
For a mural, set your image to no repeat and it's drawn at its real size on the wall.
You can also let customers upload their own images onto the design. They can crop and filter them, and you can turn on AI background removal.
Turn on resolution warnings and the designer tells customers when an image is too small to print well, with a stronger warning when the quality drops further. Your print files default to 300 DPI.
Approval, then the files
You can require the customer to tick I have reviewed and approve my design before saving. Every save creates a proof image.
Turn on print output and each order also gets a print-ready file with bleed and a production manifest.

One calculator for your whole catalog
You don't build a calculator per design. One wallpaper calculator can read the pattern image, repeat and panel width from each product or variant, so every design uses the same setup.
What if a price comes out wrong?
Click Price looks wrong? under the preview price. The Troubleshoot tab runs the formula for those exact choices and shows the value of every step.
Or tell Chat with AI: "a 12.5 by 8 foot wall in traditional paste should be 550." It opens Troubleshoot with those choices filled in.
Let AI handle the setup, and the upkeep
Chat with AI sits beside the editor. It builds the calculator from a description, and later it changes a rate, adds a material or restyles the calculator when you ask.
- Start from your price sheet: attach it as a spreadsheet, CSV or Excel file.
- Match a look: attach a screenshot of the style you want.
- Translate: AI translation covers the calculator, and the designer's labels sit in the same translation table.
What happens after the order?
Every line arrives with its design. The in-app Orders tab shows each line's options, proof image and design files, in your own language.
Customers can fix a mistake in the cart. Edit options reopens the calculator from the cart, so a wrong measurement or a design change doesn't mean starting over.
Ordering the same wall again needs the right button. Shopify has its own Buy again button in customer accounts. It comes with Shopify, not with any app, and it only re-adds the product. The wall size, the pattern and the design are gone, so your customer lands on an empty product page and measures the wall all over again.
Appify Custom Product Options gives them one that keeps the design. The Appify Reorder block goes in customer accounts and on the order status page, and a Reorder this item link goes in the order confirmation email. Either one rebuilds the wall as it was: the size, the pattern, where it sat and the price, ready to add to cart.
Your customer can't tell the two buttons apart, so don't show both. Turn off Shopify's Buy again in the checkout and customer accounts editor, then add the Appify Reorder block in its place. Then every repeat order comes back whole. Why Shopify's Buy again drops custom options explains what Shopify keeps on the order line, and why the configuration can't come back through that button.
Abandoned carts come back whole. A Restore your cart link rebuilds the customized wallpaper along with everything else in the cart.

FAQ
Can I price wallpaper by square foot and still show the number of panels?
Yes. The price comes from the area and the material rate, and a Calculation field shows the panel count, rounded up. It can go on the order too.
Can customers enter their wall in inches instead of feet?
Yes. A Length field can offer more than one unit, and the calculator converts the entry before pricing it.
Does the preview show the pattern at real size?
Yes. The Product Designer draws the wall at the size the customer entered, with the pattern at its real scale, panel seams, a ruler and a person figure for reference.
Can I sell murals as well as repeating patterns?
Yes. Set the repeat to none and the mural is drawn at its real size on the wall.
Do I need a separate calculator for every design?
No. One calculator can read each product's or variant's pattern image, repeat and panel width.
What do I get with each order?
The measurements, the options and a proof image. With print output on, a print-ready file with bleed and a production manifest too.
Every wall priced to size, every panel print-ready.
