To let customers upload several photos for a collage or photo gift, add a File upload option that accepts more than one file, then turn on Personalization and give the upload a row of slots. Appify Custom Product Options drops each photo into the next free slot on your product image, so the shopper sees the finished collage before they buy.
You choose how many slots there are and where each one sits. The shopper uploads, watches the photos land, and can drag them around.
How does a multi-photo upload work on the product page?
Three pieces work together. Each has its own settings.
- The upload. A File upload option with Minimum files and Maximum files set to the number of photos your product takes. A 4-photo frame might need exactly 4.
- The preview. A Personalization layer tied to that upload. It puts the customer's photos on your product image as they upload.
- The layout. A Multi-select layout that decides where each photo goes.
The Multi-Select Options guide covers both layout modes in detail.
How do you set up a photo collage, step by step?
This example is a 2 by 2 collage. The same steps work for any grid you draw.
- Add a File upload option. List the file types you accept, such as image/*, and set Minimum files and Maximum files to 4. The settings are in the option settings guide.
- Open the Personalization step. Switch on Enable personalization and keep Use Shopify product image as the base image, or upload your own. The setup guide walks through each step.
- Add a layer for the upload. Pick the File upload option under Add layer for option and click Add.
- Set the layout. Under Multi-select layout, set Mode to the Slots choice (fill in selection order) and set Slot count to 4.
- Place the slots. Each slot appears as a sub-layer named Layer 1.1, Layer 1.2 and so on. Position each one, so the four sit in a 2 by 2 grid. Arrange in a row resets them to a simple row if you want to start over.
- Pick a shape. Rectangle suits a classic collage. Circle / oval gives round photos, and a custom mask image lets you define the visible area.
- Choose what customers can adjust. Under Allow customer to, switch on the moves you want. More on those below.
- Save and publish. Then upload four test photos yourself.
Slot count runs from 1 to 50, and by default it matches the upload's maximum. A 4-photo frame and a 12-photo calendar wall use the same setup with a different number.
What does the shopper see while they upload?
The first photo fills slot 1, the second fills slot 2, and so on in the order they were added. The preview updates straight away.
Slots with no photo yet stay invisible on the storefront, so a half-finished collage never shows empty boxes to the customer. In your editor preview, the empty slots show as dashed boxes so you can see where they go.
Customers can also drag photos between slots to reorder them. If they put the wedding photo in the wrong corner, they swap it in one move and the preview follows.
Can customers move, resize and rotate each photo?
Yes, if you allow it. On the layer, the Allow customer to section has three checkboxes:
- Change image position (drag)
- Change image size (corner handle)
- Rotate image (top handle)
They apply to every filled slot. Switch on position and size for a photo gift where people fine-tune the framing. Leave them off for a fixed layout where you want every photo to sit exactly where you placed it.
Slots or Per value: which layout fits your product?
The same Multi-select layout section offers a second mode. Pick by one question: does the position of a photo matter?
| Mode | How it behaves | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Slots | Each photo fills the next free slot, in order. Customers can drag photos between slots. | Photo collages and galleries, where any photo can go anywhere |
| Per value | Each choice has its own fixed spot. Pick it and it appears there. Clear it and the spot empties. | Choices that each map to a set area, such as the print areas on a T-shirt |
The Help Center's example for Per value is a custom T-shirt with three fixed areas: left chest, back and sleeve. Each image choice maps to one area. Picking the logo puts it on the left chest, and picking the emblem puts it on the back.
For a collage, Slots is almost always the right call. Customers do not care which corner a photo lands in until they see it, and then they want to move it.
Which route is this: Personalization or the Product Designer?
This guide uses Personalization, a live preview of photos and text on a fixed product photo. It suits frames, canvases, mugs and other products where you supply the base image.
The other route is the Product Designer, a full design canvas for products where the design is the product. Its Image Edit mode suits one photo that a customer crops, as in custom posters and photo prints.
The engraved gifts guide explains the difference between Personalization and the Designer in more detail.
What arrives with the order?
When the shopper adds the product to the cart, the app saves a proof image: a flattened PNG of the finished collage, with only the photos they chose. It is attached to the cart line and the order, so you and the customer see the same picture.
In the app's Orders tab, each line shows the proof thumbnail, an Options table and Open file and Open proof links. Your team opens the order, checks the collage and downloads the uploaded photos from the same line.
For a wider look at checking proofs and design files before production, read how to review custom orders with proofs and design files. If the product is a framed print, the photo frame personalizer breakdown shows the same preview idea with frames and text. File upload settings and what staff see are also covered in how to let customers upload artwork or a PDF.
Check it before you go live
- Upload exactly your minimum number of photos. Confirm every slot fills and the preview looks right.
- Upload fewer than the minimum. Confirm it behaves the way you set Minimum files.
- Drag photos between slots. Confirm the preview follows.
- Try the move, resize and rotate handles that you switched on.
- Add to cart and open the proof. Check that it shows only the filled slots.
- Test on a phone. Run the whole flow on a small screen.
