Two Shopify apps can both say "formula pricing" and mean very different things.
In one, it means an area price. The customer types a length and a width, and the app multiplies them by your rate. In the other, it means a pricing engine: formulas that read every choice, look up your rate sheet, apply if/then rules, round up, and hold a minimum.
Appify Custom Product Options is the second kind, on every plan. And you don't write the formulas yourself: describe the price in plain English and the app writes it. Here's how to tell the two apart before you install.
The two things "formula pricing" can mean
An area price on a measurement option
This is the version many options apps offer. A measurement option takes up to a few numbers, like width and height. The app multiplies them together and times your rate.
That prices a plain area or length well. It stops there. The rate doesn't change with the material, nothing rounds up to whole rolls, and there's no minimum on the order.
A pricing engine
Here, a formula can sit on any option and on the final price. It reads every choice the customer makes, not only the numbers they type.
It can look up a rate in your price sheet, apply "if this, then that," round up and cap. Fees, minimums and quantity breaks work around it. That's how Appify Custom Product Options prices a product.
Where the difference shows up
Most real rate cards have lines an area price can't read. Here's what each one takes, and the part of the engine that does it:
- "The rate depends on the material." A pricing table lookup inside the formula, keyed on the chosen material.
- "The rate drops for bigger sizes." A table keyed on size, which can match exactly, take the nearest row, or blend between rows for sizes you never listed.
- "We sell whole rolls, not fractions." CEILING rounds the count up.
- "Never under our minimum." A minimum price on the total.
- "Premium costs more, but only on large sizes." IF, with AND, inside the formula.
- "Lettering is priced per character." CHARCOUNT reads the length of the text.
- "Setup is charged once per order." A fixed fee that sits outside the quantity math and is never discounted.
What a real formula looks like
Take a vinyl banner priced by area, material and grommets. In Appify Custom Product Options it's three small steps, each a pricing variable or option formula:
-
Area:
INPUT("WIDTH") * INPUT("HEIGHT") / 144turns inches into square feet. -
Rate:
TABLE("banner_rates", OPT_TOKEN("MATERIAL"))reads the material's rate from your sheet. -
Grommets choice:
CEILING(2 * (INPUT("WIDTH") + INPUT("HEIGHT")) / 24) * VAR("GROMMET_RATE")counts one grommet per 24 inches of edge.
The total price formula then multiplies area by rate and adds the grommets. A minimum price sits on the total.
AREA is worked out once and reused wherever it's needed, including as a condition in a rule. Change the material and the rate follows. Change the size and the area, the grommets and the total all follow.
For more ways one choice can change another choice's price, see conditional pricing rules on Shopify.
You never have to type any of that. In any formula field, Describe with AI turns "width times height in square feet, times the material rate, with a minimum order price" into a working formula that uses your own option names. Explain formula reads any formula back to you in plain English.
How to tell which kind an app has
Run your hardest product through these questions. An area price answers yes to the first one only.
- Can it price from numbers the customer types?
- Can a formula read the material, the finish, or any other choice?
- Is there a formula on the final price, where everything comes together?
- Can the formula look up your rate sheet?
- Can it say "if this, then that"?
- Can it round up, cap, and hold a minimum?
- Can you see why a price came out wrong?
How Easify and Globo use the term
You'll meet two big options apps in almost any search, so here's how their version lines up. Easify and Globo both do the core job of an options app well: choices on a product page, each with an add-on price.
Their formula pricing is the area price. It lives on a measurement option, on a higher plan. The typed numbers are multiplied by your rate, and that one calculation is the whole formula.
Where they fit: products priced by choices with add-on prices, plus that one measurement price. Those jobs live inside Appify Custom Product Options too. Choosing them is choosing fewer features, not different ones.
Each gets a closer look in Easify alternatives for advanced pricing and Globo alternatives for formula pricing.

Compared September 2026. Apps change, so features may have moved since.
Appify Custom Product Options is a full Yes on all 13 rows. Easify and Globo are a full Yes on none. Their formula is the first row, on a higher plan. The other twelve are what turns a formula into a pricing engine.
Getting the formula right without writing it
A pricing engine only helps if you can set it up. In Appify Custom Product Options, the AI does most of that work:
- Start from your price sheet. Drag a CSV or Excel file onto Chat with AI, or describe how you price. It builds the options, the formulas and the rules.
- Read any formula in plain English. Explain formula works on formulas someone else wrote, too.
- Find out why a price is off. The Troubleshoot tab runs the formula for the choices in the preview, shows what every part is worth, and names the fix. Type the price you expected and it searches for where that number went.
- Change it later by asking. "Raise the gloss rate" updates the formula that's already there.

FAQ
What is formula pricing on Shopify?
A price the app calculates from the customer's choices instead of a fixed variant price. In basic apps it's an area price. In Appify Custom Product Options it's a full engine: formulas on every option and the total, with rate tables, if/then rules and a minimum.
Is an area price the same as formula pricing?
It's the simplest kind. Length times width times a rate works for plain area pricing, but it can't read the material, round up, or hold a minimum.
Do Easify and Globo have formula pricing?
Both have a measurement price on a higher plan: the typed numbers times your rate. Neither has a formula on the final price, rate-sheet lookups or if/then logic inside the formula.
Do I need to know how to write formulas?
No. Describe the price in plain English and Describe with AI writes the formula. Explain formula reads any formula back to you.
Can a formula use my price sheet?
Yes. Put the rates in a pricing table and the formula looks up the right cell by size, material or both. It can blend between rows for sizes you never listed.
What are pricing variables?
Named values like AREA or MATERIAL_RATE. You work them out once and reuse them in any formula, and in rules as conditions.
More than length times width. Your whole rate card.
