How to Price Custom Signs on Shopify by Size, Material and Quantity

Illustration of a rate sheet, tape measure and pen on a wooden counter beside a blank sign on an easel and a stack of yard signs with wire stakes, headlined From Rate Card to Every Sign

A realtor wants 25 double-sided 18 by 24 inch yard signs on wire stakes. Another customer wants one 30 by 40 inch aluminum sign. Same product page. What does each one cost?

That is the hard part of selling custom signs on Shopify. The price depends on the size or the area, the material, one side or two, the stake type, how many they order, and a setup fee that should be charged once, not once per sign. Get one of those wrong and you either lose money on the order or price yourself out of it.

Appify Custom Product Options works out every one of those on the product page, the way you would on paper, and the customer sees the total before they add to cart.

Here is what sign pricing has to handle, a worked example, and how each piece is set up.

Why is sign pricing hard on Shopify?

Because a sign price is not one number. Some parts grow with the size, some are charged per sign, one is charged once per order, and the quantity discount should only reach some of them.

  • Size and area. 18 by 24 from a list, or 30 by 40 typed in. A custom size is priced by its area, from your rate per square foot.
  • Material. Corrugated plastic, aluminum and foam board each have their own rate.
  • Sides. Printing the back as well adds to every sign.
  • Stake type. None, a wire H-stake or a heavy-duty stake, charged per sign, and only offered for the materials that take one.
  • Quantity breaks. The price per sign falls as the run grows, and a big sign can have a different ladder from a small one.
  • A setup fee charged once. A 25 dollar setup fee on 25 signs is 25, not 625.

Shopify's variants top out at three options and cannot take a size the customer types. So the price has to be worked out, not looked up from a variant, and the setup fee has to sit outside the per-sign price, where the quantity can't multiply it.

A worked example

All prices here are made-up examples, in dollars. Say corrugated plastic is 6 dollars a square foot, a second printed side adds 8, a wire H-stake adds 2, orders of 25 or more take 20% off, and setup is 25.

The customer picks 18 by 24 inches, corrugated, double-sided, wire H-stakes, and a quantity of 25.

  1. Area: 18 × 24 = 432 square inches, which is 3 square feet.
  2. Material: 3 × 6 = 18.
  3. Second side: add 8. That is 26.
  4. Stake: add 2. One sign is 28.
  5. The run: 28 × 25 = 700.
  6. Quantity break: 25 or more takes 20% off the signs. 700 − 140 = 560.
  7. Setup fee: 25, charged once and never discounted. 560 + 25 = 585.

The customer sees 585 for 25 signs, 23.40 each, before they add to cart. One sign on its own is 53: the 28 sign plus the 25 setup.

Charge that setup fee per sign by mistake and the same order carries 625 in setup alone. That is the difference between a price that works and one that loses the job.

The other customer changes one thing at a time. A custom 30 by 40 sign is 8.33 square feet, so it is 50 in corrugated before the extras. Switch to aluminum and the stake choice disappears, because it does not fit that material.

Beside each quantity choice, the calculator can also show the price and the saving, so the customer sees what moving from 10 signs to 25 is worth.

How do you set it up in Appify Custom Product Options?

You don't have to start from a blank page. The app comes with a catalog of ready-made calculators, included at no extra cost. Open one in the preview, click Install to my store, and it arrives in your calculators as a draft. Then put in your own sizes, materials and rates, assign your products and publish.

Or describe the whole thing to Chat with AI: "I sell yard signs. Customers pick a size or enter a custom one, then material, sides, stakes and quantity. Here's my rate card." Attach the spreadsheet, and it adds the options and the pricing.

Here's what it builds, so you know what to ask for.

1. Size: stock sizes and a Custom choice

Show your stock sizes as buttons or swatches, with a Custom choice at the end. A Show if rule reveals width and height fields only when Custom is picked.

Stock sizes and custom sizes are both priced from their area, the same way.

2. The price: an area formula, or a pricing table

Most sign shops price by area, and that is one short formula: width times height gives the square feet, times the rate for the material the customer picked.

Each material choice holds its own rate per square foot, so corrugated and aluminum each price correctly from the same formula. A pricing variable holds the square feet, so the sides, the stakes and everything else can read it.

A pricing table is the other route, for shops whose price isn't a straight rate per square foot:

  • A price for each stock size. Sizes down one side and materials across the top, when an 18 by 24 has its own price rather than an area rate.
  • A rate that drops as signs get bigger. A short table keyed on square feet, so a small sign pays one rate and anything over 30 square feet pays a lower one.

You can mix them, too: the area formula for the price, with a table for the one part that does not follow a rate.

3. Quantity breaks that fit sign runs

Quantity discount rules take the price per sign down at each break you set. Paste your tiers from a spreadsheet instead of typing them.

  • Percent off, amount off, or a target price. "100 or more: 5.00 each" can be written exactly like that.
  • Different breaks by size. The 2D mode uses a second number, like width or area, so a small sign and a big banner can each have their own discount ladder.
  • Per job or across the order. Per configuration keeps each design as its own run, so 10 copies of a 25-sign job stay at the 25-sign price. Per calculator lets different designs add up to the next break.
  • Shown on the page. The inline price puts the price and the saving beside each quantity choice, and a tiers table block can show the whole ladder.

The discount is applied at checkout automatically. No discount codes.

4. Rules for options that belong to one material

  • Show if: the stake choice, none, wire H-stake or heavy-duty, appears only when the material is corrugated. A frame or bracket choice can take its place for the others.
  • Limit: set a smaller maximum width when a material only comes in smaller sheets.
  • Hide values: remove a finish from the list when it doesn't go with the material picked.

A hidden option is left out of the price and the cart, so nobody pays for a stake on an aluminum sign.

5. Fees charged once, rush, and the rest of the price

  • Fixed fees: a setup or artwork charge, charged once however many signs are ordered, not once per sign. It shows as its own line, quantity discounts never touch it, and a fee that works out to zero is hidden.
  • Rush: a fee that appears only when the customer picks rush, or a price adjustment that adds a percentage.
  • Minimum price: a floor so a single small sign still covers your costs.
  • SKU and weight: a custom SKU built from the choices, and a shipping weight from its own formula.

Every size, every material, every run length, one native cart line. The calculated price is charged at checkout, and no size or quantity ever becomes a new variant.

Can customers design the sign on the page?

Yes. Most options apps have no designer at all. Appify Custom Product Options has a built-in Product Designer: a full-screen editor where the customer lays out the sign itself.

  • The real size. The artboard is tied to the size they picked, so a 30 by 40 sign gets a 30 by 40 canvas.
  • Bleed and safe zone lines on the canvas, so text stays clear of the edge.
  • Text, fonts, clipart, shapes and their own logo on layers.
  • Front and back. A back side can appear only when the customer picks double-sided with a different image.
  • Low-resolution warnings when an uploaded logo is too small for the print size.

A custom 18 by 9 inch double-sided sign in the Product Designer. The width and height on the right set the canvas, Front and Back switch sides, and the warning at the bottom flags an image that is too small to print sharply at that size.

When they save, the order can get a proof image, a print-ready PNG with bleed and a production manifest, behind one Design Files link. A double-sided sign lists the front and back separately. For more on what printers need, see what file formats print vendors need from custom orders.

What if a price comes out wrong?

Click Price looks wrong? under the preview price. The Troubleshoot tab runs the formula for those exact choices and shows every part of it, with the likely issue.

Or tell Chat with AI what it should be: "25 double-sided 18x24 with stakes should be 610." It opens Troubleshoot with those choices filled in.

What happens after the order?

Production gets the whole job. Size, material, sides, stakes and quantity are saved on the order, with the design files attached.

A wrong choice is easy to fix. An Edit options button in the cart reopens the calculator with everything filled in.

The next campaign starts from the last one. Shopify's own Buy again button re-adds the product and drops every choice.

The Appify Reorder block in customer accounts, and a Reorder this item link in the order confirmation email, bring the same signs back, artwork included. Here's why Buy again drops custom options.

Abandoned carts come back whole. A Restore your cart link rebuilds every configured sign in the cart.

Yes. Add a Custom choice to the size list, and width and height fields appear. The custom size can be priced by area from your own rates.

Can the price per sign drop as the quantity goes up?

Yes. Quantity discount rules take the price down at each break, as a percentage, an amount, or an exact price per sign. They're applied at checkout automatically.

Can the quantity breaks differ by sign size?

Yes. The 2D mode gives each size range its own set of breaks.

Can a setup fee be charged once instead of per sign?

Yes. A fixed fee is charged once on top of the signs, whether the order is for 1 sign or 250, and quantity discounts never reduce it.

Can stakes appear only for corrugated signs?

Yes. A Show if rule shows the stake option only for that material. Hidden options are left out of the price and the cart.

Can customers design both sides of a sign?
