To sell custom-size picture frames and framed prints on Shopify, let the customer type the size, choose the frame and add a photo, and price the order from your own size grid. No size becomes a variant, and the order carries everything your workshop needs.
Appify Custom Product Options handles all of it on one product page. Here is what a frame shop needs, a worked price, and what arrives with the order.
What does a custom frame calculator need?
- Standard sizes and a custom one. Buttons for the sizes you sell most, plus a Custom button that opens width and height fields.
- Orientation. Portrait or landscape, which can change the frames on offer.
- A frame choice. Moldings shown as picture swatches, each with its own price if you want one.
- A photo. An upload, and a way for the customer to frame it the way they like.
- A price that follows the size. A bigger frame costs more, and the customer sees it before checkout.
Variants can't hold this. Every width, height and molding would be its own variant, and a Custom size has no variant at all.
How do you price a frame by its size?
Most frame shops quote from a grid: widths across the top, heights down the side. That grid goes into a pricing table, and the calculator looks the price up from the numbers the customer types. How to price from a 2D pricing table or rate sheet covers the lookup in detail.
Here is a made-up grid for one molding, in dollars.
| Width (rows) × Height (columns) | 10 in | 14 in | 20 in |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 in | 35 | 42 | 55 |
| 11 in | 44 | 52 | 66 |
| 16 in | 58 | 68 | 78 |
Example numbers only. Your grid goes here.
A customer types 10 wide and 13 tall. With the lookup mode set to Nearest upper, the width goes up to the 11 inch row and the height goes up to the 14 inch column. The grid price is 52.
The customer picks a gold molding that you price at 15 extra. The total is 52 + 15 = 67, shown before they add to cart. The order still says 10 by 13, so the workshop cuts what was asked for.
Not every shop prices from a grid. A formula that reads the width and height can price the area instead, and a pricing variable can hold that area for every other rule to reuse.
How do you set it up in Appify Custom Product Options?
Describe the product to Chat with AI and it builds the options, the pricing and the rules. Attach your price sheet and it builds the table. The pieces below are what you are adjusting.
1. Size buttons and a Custom size
Standard sizes are buttons. Custom opens width and height fields that show only when Custom is picked. Give the width and height fields a minimum and a maximum, so nobody orders a frame you can't build.
2. Frames that follow the orientation
Show the frames as image swatches. A Show value(s) if rule can list only the portrait moldings for Portrait and only the landscape ones for Landscape. A value rule picks the first frame of the new set when the orientation changes, so a mismatched frame never stays selected.
3. A live preview of the framed photo
Personalization turns the product image into a preview. The customer's photo appears inside the chosen frame and changes as they pick. The photo layer can be moved, resized and rotated.
4. A print-size canvas, when the print file matters
The preview above shows the framed photo. If you also print the photo, add a Product Designer button. It opens a canvas at the exact size picked, with the frame shown around it. The Picture Frame Designer walks through one.
The Product Designer has two modes. Image Edit mode frames one uploaded photo, and customers crop it by dragging a selection. The full design mode is a canvas for artwork. Our posters and photo prints guide explains Image Edit in more detail.
5. A warning before a soft photo is printed
The Product Designer can warn about low resolution when a photo lacks the pixels for its print size. The customer can swap it while it is still easy.
Your grid, your moldings, one native cart line. The calculated price is charged at checkout automatically, and no size or frame ever becomes a new variant.
What if a frame has text on it?
A name plate or caption is a text box on the same product. Each line can have its own font, color and size, and the text shows on the preview with the photo and frame. The Picture Frame Personalization demo walks through one, option by option.
What arrives with the order?
The workshop gets the details. The size, orientation, frame and text are saved on the order. A proof image of the finished preview is attached to the cart line, so you and the customer see the same picture.
The print file is ready. Orders made in the Product Designer carry a Design Files link with the proof, a print-ready file and a production manifest. The frame is a preview and stays out of the print file. How to review custom orders with proofs and design files shows the flow.
A wrong size is easy to fix. An Edit options button in the cart reopens the calculator.
The next frame needs the right button. Shopify's own Buy again only re-adds the product, so the size, the frame and the photo are gone. Appify Reorder puts the same framed print back in the cart with every choice filled in.
How do you sell many frame products?
You don't need one calculator per product. Assign a calculator to a whole collection, such as Framed prints, and every product in it shows the calculator, including products you add later. Collection assignment is set in Calculator Editor under Placement & Styling.

FAQ
Can customers order a frame size you don't list?
Yes. A Custom button opens width and height fields. A minimum and a maximum on the fields keep the size inside what you make.
Can a bigger frame cost more automatically?
Yes. A pricing table or a formula reads the size the customer typed, and the total updates as they type.
Does each size and frame create a Shopify variant?
No. Options and pricing live outside Shopify's variant system, and the calculated price is charged on one cart line.
Can customers see their photo in the frame before they buy?
Yes. The product image shows the photo inside the chosen frame and updates as they pick.
Will the frame appear in the print file?
Not when you use the Product Designer. The frame is a preview scene, and the print-ready file holds the photo at the size ordered.
