Inside a Shopify Wallpaper Calculator That Shows the Wall and the Price Together

Illustration of a card with three colour swatches and two size boxes, an arrow to a wall covered in a blue world map pattern repeating down it, and a person figure for scale

This wallpaper calculator asks three things: a colour, the wall's width and height, and a click on Preview & Show Price. That button opens the wall at the size the shopper typed, with the pattern repeating down it and the total beside it.

It's the Wallpaper Repeat Vertical Y calculator on our Shopify demo store, built with Appify Custom Product Options. Each colour is a Shopify variant, and that variant's price is the price per square foot.

What it does

The shopper picks Blue, Grey or Black, types a width and a height in inches, and opens the preview. The price summary shows the area in square feet and the total.

Three options: colour, wall size, preview.

In plain words, the price is the wall's area times the colour's rate. The preview is where the shopper sees what that area looks like.

Why this calculator is hard to build, and how Appify Custom Product Options handles it

  • A small swatch can't show a whole wall. A world map on a circle doesn't tell anyone how it sits across 8 feet. The button opens the Product Designer as a full-screen preview drawn at the size they typed.
  • The design has to repeat the right way. This pattern runs down the wall, so the preview repeats it vertically. Across or both ways is a setting, covered in how to set up wallpaper pattern repeats.
  • Each colour carries its own rate. The swatches are the product's colour variants in Shopify, so the rate changes with the colour and needs no second option.
  • The price has to follow the wall. A pricing variable turns inches into square feet, and the total updates live, inside the preview too.
  • The order has to keep the wall. Width, height and colour stay on the order, and the shopper can change them from the cart.

One price, worked out

Here's Grey for a wall 120 inches wide and 96 inches high, with prices in dollars. The area and the total come from the calculator's price summary. The rate is the Grey variant's price.

  • Area: 120 by 96 inches is 80.00 square feet.
  • Rate: the Grey variant is 28.00 in Shopify, so Grey costs 28.00 per square foot.
  • Total: 80.00 square feet at 28.00 comes to 2,240.00.

The design decisions

Three options and nothing else

Colour, a dimensions option with Width and Height, and the preview button. Wall size is required, so the shopper can't add to cart without one. Everything else this product needs happens in the preview.

The price formula is one line

A variable called AREA_FT2 multiplies width by height and divides by 144. The total price formula is VAR("AREA_FT2") * VAR("SHOPIFY.PRICE"): square feet times the selected variant's price.

So in Shopify you price a square foot, once per colour. To change a colour's rate, edit that variant's price.

The price button is the preview

One button opens the preview and shows the price. The wall takes its size from the two boxes, the pattern is the selected colour's product image, and the right panel shows the colour, the size boxes and the live total.

A shopper can change the width inside the preview and see the wall and the price move together.

Personalizers are common. A design canvas that draws the wall size the shopper entered is not. Here three options and one button show the wallpaper at that size.

Every editing tool is off

The shopper can't add text, upload a picture or place clipart. They can move the pattern to choose where it starts, and change the colour or size. That keeps the preview a preview. How the pattern, seams and scale figure are set up is in the pattern repeat guide.

A note box for the print room

The preview has an Add note button. What the shopper writes lands on the order as Production Notes, so a request about where the pattern should start reaches whoever prints it.

What arrives with the order

The calculated price goes to checkout. Cart properties carry the width and height, the colour is the cart variant, and any note arrives as Production Notes. Saving the design creates a proof image for the app's Orders page.

Mistyped a width? Edit options in the cart fixes it without starting over. And for a second room in the same colour, Appify Reorder fills in the old choices so only the size needs changing.

Make it yours

  • Let customers measure their own way. Add centimetres and feet and inches, as the multi-unit wallpaper calculator does.
  • Price by material too. Add a material option and read each material's rate from a pricing table, then multiply it by the area.
  • Set a floor. A minimum price on the total keeps a small wall from going out under your minimum order.

The app's template catalog includes a wallpaper sizing calculator to start from. Or ask Chat with AI for the options and the price in your own words:

"Build a wallpaper calculator priced by wall area."

"Add a colour image swatch and a required Width and Height in inches."

"Price the product as width times height divided by 144, times the selected variant's price."

Point the colour swatch at the product's variants in its settings, add the preview button, and set the wall in the Designer step with the wallpaper bindings guide. Check one wall against a price you've worked out by hand before you publish.

FAQ

Can customers preview wallpaper at the wall size they typed?

Yes. The Product Designer draws the wall from the width and height they entered, fills it with the pattern and shows the total beside it.

Can each colour have a different rate?

Yes. Each colour is a Shopify variant, and its price is that colour's rate per square foot.

What if the wallpaper repeats across instead of down?

Change the repeat setting on the pattern. The calculator and the price stay the same. Another demo shows a pattern that repeats across the wall.

One button shows the wall and the price.
