Can I Use Area-Based Pricing for Custom Flooring on Shopify?

A 20 x 15 foot room floor plan turning into a stack of flooring cartons and a Shopify card reading You need 14 cartons

Yes, you can use area-based pricing for custom flooring on Shopify. The customer enters a room size, the calculator turns it into square feet, and the price updates as they type.

Most flooring ships by the carton, so the same calculator also adds waste and rounds up to whole cartons. Appify Custom Product Options does all of it on your product page.

How does area-based pricing work for flooring?

The price follows one number: the area of the room. Everything else, like the floor the customer picks, changes the rate or the carton size.

There are three ways to collect that area. Pick the one that matches how your customers know their rooms.

Customer enters Area comes from Use it when
Length and width A Dimensions field with a unit, minimum, maximum and step for each side The room is a rectangle
Square footage An Area field in the unit you set, such as sq ft or sq m The customer already knows the number
Each wall of the room A Room map that adds up the area of every room measured Rooms are L-shaped, or there are several of them

The Room map has its own walkthrough in a Shopify flooring square footage calculator for real rooms.

What is the formula for flooring priced by area?

For a rectangle it is the two sides times your rate. The formula editor reads each side by name and multiplies.

The rate does not have to be one number. A pricing table keyed by the floor the customer picks holds the rate per square foot for each floor, so one calculator prices your whole range. If each floor is a Shopify variant, the calculator can start from the selected variant's price instead.

Name the area once as a pricing variable, like AREA, and reuse it in every formula and rule. A rule can then react to size, such as a note or an upcharge once AREA passes a number you set.

Why do flooring orders need more than area times rate?

Because you sell cartons. A shopper's room is 20 by 15 feet. How many cartons is that?

Take that room, 10% extra for waste, and a floor sold in cartons that each cover 23.76 square feet.

  1. Area: 20 × 15 = 300 square feet.
  2. Add waste to the area: 300 × 1.10 = 330 square feet.
  3. Divide by the square feet per carton: 330 ÷ 23.76 = 13.9 cartons.
  4. Round up: 14 cartons.
  5. Price: 14 cartons times your carton price.

The order of those steps matters. Round first (300 ÷ 23.76 = 12.6, so 13 cartons), then add 10% (14.3, so 15 cartons), and the customer pays for a carton they didn't need.

That's a calculation, not a list of add-on prices. Your app has to run it in the right order, every time, for every floor you sell.

Why don't Shopify variants work for flooring?

Variants are fixed choices, like Oak or Walnut. They can't take a number the customer types and turn it into a carton count.

So stores fall back on a quantity box and hope the customer does the math, or they quote every floor by email. A flooring calculator puts that math on your page, where the sale happens.

How do you set up area-based flooring pricing?

You don't have to build it by hand. Describe how you quote a floor to Chat with AI and it writes the options, the pricing, and the rules. Here's what a flooring calculator needs, so you know what to ask for.

Want a starting point? The box-or-area calculator is a free template in the app, shown in this flooring calculator breakdown. Open Calculators, then Templates, to install it, and use Chat with AI to change the numbers.

1. Ask for the room, or the area

Offer length and width, an Area field, or both. A visibility rule can show one or the other, so nobody sees fields they don't need.

Each side of a Dimensions field gets its own minimum, maximum and step, so you set the range of rooms you sell.

2. Set the waste percentage

Add waste as a number the customer can see. A value rule can fill it in from another choice, like the layout, and the customer can still change it.

That keeps the extra material on screen. Nobody pays for square footage they can't see.

3. Give every floor its own carton size and price

The square feet in a carton change from floor to floor. The pricing table holds each one's carton size next to its rate.

4. Round up to whole cartons

The formula runs the five steps above in order, with a round-up function for the carton count. If formulas aren't your thing, tell Chat with AI "add 10% waste to the room area, divide by the square feet per carton, round up to whole cartons." It writes the formula for you.

The formula can make decisions too. IF, AND, and OR let it use a different rate for a premium floor, or a different rate for a layout you name. Pricing variables keep each step readable, like AREA, CARTONS, and CARTON_PRICE.

Two Calculation fields can then show "You need 14 cartons" and the price per square foot right on the page. The shopper sees both numbers they care about.

Add the carton count to the cart line under cart properties, and it shows on the order too.

The customer enters a room. You ship whole cartons. The calculated price is what goes to the cart.

5. Add the pricing rules around the carton price

  • Volume breaks: a calculated discount can step up as the carton count grows, so a whole-house order prices differently from a bathroom.
  • Minimum and maximum price: set a minimum and maximum on the total, so small orders stay worthwhile.
  • Fixed fees: flat or formula-driven, like a delivery charge that only applies when delivery is picked. Fees are never discounted.
  • Price adjustments: a surcharge for a premium finish, or a flat charge once the area passes a size you set.
  • Weight and SKU: shipping weight from its own formula, like cartons times carton weight, saved with the order for shipping rates. A custom SKU can be built from the floor and the room.

6. Offer underlayment and trim

Open a choice and use Add to cart to link your existing underlayment, trim, or transition strip products. They're added to the cart as normal Shopify products, with live price and inventory.

A visibility rule can show underlayment only for the floors you sell it with.

7. Split long orders into steps

A multi-step layout can walk the customer through the room first, then the floor, then the extras. Nobody meets every field at once.

What if a price or carton count comes out wrong?

Open the formula's Troubleshoot tab. It runs the formula for any room and floor, and shows the value of every step: the area, the waste, the division, the round-up.

Type the number you expected and it points to the likely fix. You can also tell Chat with AI "300 square feet with 10% waste should be 14 cartons, not 15" and it opens Troubleshoot with those exact choices.

Let AI handle the setup, and the upkeep

Chat with AI sits beside the editor on every tab. It builds the calculator, and months later it changes a rate, adds a floor, or restyles the calculator when you ask.

  • Start from what you have: describe how you quote a floor, or attach your price sheet as a spreadsheet, CSV, or Excel file.
  • Write and explain formulas: Describe with AI turns plain English into the carton formula. Explain formula turns any formula back into plain English.
  • Fix wrong prices: tell it what the price should be and it opens the Troubleshoot tab on that exact case.
  • Everything around the price: AI translation, an AI Style Assistant, and AI-generated swatch icons for each floor.

Can the calculator live on more than one page?

Yes. Appify Custom Product Options can place the same calculator on a collection, a landing page, or a blog post about choosing flooring.

Pick an associated product and it adds to cart from there.

What happens after the order?

The order carries the job. The customer's selections are saved with the order, and the carton count joins them once it's on the cart line.

Customers can fix a mistake in the cart. An Edit options button reopens the calculator, so a wrong measurement gets changed without starting over.

A second room is one click away. Shopify's own Buy again button drops every option. Appify Reorder brings back the whole configuration, and a Restore your cart link rebuilds abandoned carts the same way.

Selling abroad too? Prices convert automatically with Shopify Markets, and the calculator can run in multiple languages.

FAQ

Can I use area-based pricing for custom flooring products?

Yes. The customer enters length and width, or the square footage, and the price follows the area. A pricing table can hold a different rate for each floor.

Can I show a price per square foot but sell by the carton?

Yes. The calculator charges whole cartons, and a Calculation field can show the price per square foot beside it.

Does the waste percentage go on before rounding?

It should, and the formula controls the order. Add waste to the area, divide by the square feet per carton, then round up. Rounding first can add a carton the customer doesn't need.

What if every floor has a different carton size?

That's normal. A pricing table holds each floor's square feet per carton, keyed by the floor the customer picks, so one calculator serves your whole range.

Can customers enter square footage instead of room size?

Yes. Offer an Area field alongside length and width, and use a visibility rule so only the one they choose shows.

Can I add underlayment and transition strips?

Yes. Link those store products to a choice and they're added to the cart with the floor, at their live Shopify price.

Can I limit the room sizes customers can enter?

Yes. Each measurement in a Dimensions field has its own minimum, maximum, and step, so you set the range of rooms you sell.

Do I need to write formulas?

No. Describe how you price a floor to Chat with AI and it writes the formula, or start from a calculator template and change the numbers.

Every room, priced to the carton.
