Shopify Variant Limits: What to Use Instead of Variants for Custom Products

Illustration of a crowded grid of variant combinations on the left turning into a simple Width, Height and Fabric form with a live price on the right

A Shopify product can have up to 2,048 variants and up to three options. A custom product can hit both limits at once.

The way around it is to stop making the customer's choices into variants. Keep variants for the things you stock. Let Appify Custom Product Options take the rest as fields the customer fills in, priced by formula, with no new variants created.

This guide answers the three questions merchants search for, in order: how many variants Shopify allows, why custom products hit the limit, and what to do instead.

How many variants can a Shopify product have?

Shopify's help center gives two numbers for a single product.

  • Variants: up to 2,048.
  • Options: up to three, such as Size, Color and Material.

Each variant is one saved combination of those options. It carries its own price, SKU and stock count. Past these limits, Shopify's own page points merchants to a third-party app, theme code or Combined Listings on Plus.

Why do custom products keep hitting the limit?

A variant exists for every combination, so the count multiplies. Take a made-to-measure roller blind sold by the whole inch, 12 to 96 inches in both directions.

  • Width: 85 values.
  • Height: 85 values.
  • Width times height: 7,225 combinations, already past 2,048.
  • Add six fabrics: 43,350 combinations.

That is before quarter inches, and it uses all three option slots on width, height and fabric. Mount type, control side and a motor choice have nowhere to go.

Some choices can never be variants at all. A customer's artwork file, an engraving line and a delivery date are not a list you can write in advance.

The limit isn't a bug to work around. It's a sign that these choices belong in fields, not in a catalog of saved combinations.

Can you sell custom products without using variants?

Yes. Appify Custom Product Options gives the customer real input fields in place of variant dropdowns: dimensions they type, quantities, materials, add-ons, uploads and a design canvas. The price is worked out from what they enter.

The same blind now looks like this. Film sold by the roll works the same way: see how to sell window and privacy film by the roll on Shopify.

  • Width and height: two number fields with your minimum and maximum. No list of 85 values to build.
  • Fabric, mount, control side, motor: as many choices as the product needs, not three.
  • Price: a formula or a pricing table reads the size and returns the price as the customer types.

At the end, checkout pricing charges the calculated amount automatically, whatever the product's base Shopify price is. No discount codes and no setup. The configured product goes to the cart through your theme's normal add to cart.

Not every choice has to be a field. A short, fixed list you stock and count can stay as variants. The next sections show how the two work together.

What does a variant do that an option has to replace?

Variants carry real jobs. Here is where each one goes when the choice becomes an option.

The variant did this With options
Gave the order a SKU Custom SKU rules build one per configuration from a template such as BLD-{{MATERIAL}}-{{DIM1}}x{{DIM2}}
Set the shipping weight Weight calculation works the weight out from the choices and saves it with the order
Counted stock on a physical item Link that item to a choice as an add-on product. It joins the cart as a normal Shopify line with live price and inventory
Showed the right photo An image swatch can take its values and photos from your Shopify variants
Set a starting price Set the base price to Selected Product Variant and the calculator builds on that price

The full side-by-side is in product options vs variants on Shopify, explained for custom products.

Can you keep the variants you already have?

Yes, and many stores should. If fabric is already a Shopify variant with a photo each, leave it there.

  • Swatches from the catalog. Point an image swatch at your Shopify variants. Values and photos come from the catalog, and unavailable ones show dimmed.
  • The swatch picks the variant. On by default, so price, cart and design preview update without a reload.
  • Rules read the catalog. A condition can check a Shopify Color or Size, then show, hide or require a calculator field. Pick Red on the theme's own picker and the artwork upload appears.

For the rules side, see how to show or hide product options based on a customer's choices.

Variants for what you stock and count. Options for what the customer decides. One product page, one cart line.

Which choices should be variants and which should be options?

Ask in this order. The first yes settles it.

  1. Does the customer type a number? Width, height, yardage. Option.
  2. Does the customer supply something? A file, a line of text, a date. Option.
  3. Do you hold stock of that exact item? Variant, or an add-on product linked to a choice.
  4. Is it a short, fixed list? Either works. Use an option if its price depends on the other choices.

A finish that costs a flat amount is fine as a variant. A finish priced per square foot of the size the customer just typed is not a fixed number, so it can't be one. How to price complex custom products on Shopify covers the pricing building blocks behind that call.

How do you set it up?

You don't have to build it by hand. Chat with AI sits beside the editor and builds options, pricing and rules from a plain description. A starting prompt for the blind:

"I sell roller blinds made to size. Add width and height in inches, from 12 to 96. Add a fabric choice with images, a mount type, a control side and a motor option. Price the blind from the width and height using the attached price sheet. Show the motor choices only when I pick Motorized."

Before you publish, test three sizes in the preview: one your sheet lists, one between two lines and one at the edge of your limits. If a price looks off, Price looks wrong? opens the Troubleshoot tab for those exact choices.

What happens to the choices after the order?

With variants, Shopify remembers the combination. With options, the choices stay attached to the cart line instead. Customers can use Edit options to fix a measurement in the cart. Your team sees every choice in the app's Orders tab.

For repeat orders, Appify Reorder brings the product back with every choice filled in. Shopify's own Buy again only adds the variant.

FAQ

How many variants can a Shopify product have?

Up to 2,048 variants, with a maximum of three options per product, according to Shopify's help center.

Why do my product variants keep hitting Shopify's limits?

Variants multiply. A width, a height and a fabric reach thousands of combinations quickly, and the 2,048 cap and the three-option cap both get in the way.

Can I sell custom products without using Shopify variants?

Yes. Appify Custom Product Options lets the customer type measurements and pick choices in fields. The price is calculated from those entries and applied at checkout.

What is the difference between options and variants on Shopify?

A variant is a saved combination with its own price, SKU and stock. An option here is a field the customer fills in, priced by formula.

Can I keep my existing variants?

Yes. A swatch can pull its values and photos from your variants, the base price can start from the selected variant, and rules can read a Shopify Color or Size.

Will my orders still have a SKU and a weight?

Yes. Custom SKU rules and weight calculation build both from the customer's choices and save them with the order.

Sell every size without counting variants.
