Product options are the choices a shopper makes on a product page, such as size or color. On Shopify, a product can have up to three of them, and each combination of their values can become a variant.
That is enough for a T-shirt. It is not enough when shoppers need to type a measurement or upload a file. Appify Custom Product Options takes over there: it adds real input fields to the product page and prices them.
What are product options on Shopify?
In Shopify's help center, options are the attributes a product can vary by. An option such as Size has values such as Small, Medium and Large, and customers see those values when they pick a variant.
Variants are the combinations. Take a T-shirt with a size option and a color option. Each size and color pairing is one variant.
| Term | What it is | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Option | An attribute the product varies by | Size |
| Option value | One choice inside that option | Small, Medium, Large |
| Variant | One combination of values | Blue / Small |
Definitions from Shopify Help Center: Add variants, checked October 2026.
Shopify's limits are 3 options and 2,048 variants per product.
How do you set up product options in Shopify?
You do it from the product page in your admin:
- Go to Products and open the product.
- In the Variants section, click Add options like size or color.
- Type an option name, such as Size.
- Type the option values, such as Small, Medium and Large.
- Click Add another option if you need a second or third one.
- Click Done, then Save.
The values are ones you type in ahead of time, and the shopper picks from your list. For a deeper look at how options and variants differ on custom products, read product options vs variants on Shopify.
When do native options stop being enough?
Shopify's own help page points to two routes past its limits: a third-party app from the Shopify App Store, or theme code that collects line item properties. Here is when merchants reach for an app, and what Appify Custom Product Options gives them.
| What the product needs | What Appify Custom Product Options gives you |
|---|---|
| More than three options | Fields you add in the calculator editor, from 33 option types |
| A size the shopper types | Number, length, area and dimension fields |
| Engraving text or artwork | Text box, text area and file upload |
| A price that follows the choices | Pricing formulas that read the options |
| A field that appears only sometimes | Visibility rules that show, hide or require a field |

The 2,048 cap is its own topic. If you are counting variants, see what to use instead of variants for custom products.
Native options let a shopper choose from a list. Appify Custom Product Options lets a shopper fill in a form, and the price follows what they fill in.
What does Appify Custom Product Options add?
Instead of variant dropdowns, the app gives shoppers real input fields on the product page: dimensions, quantities, materials, add-ons. The price is calculated from formulas you define, with no coding.
The option types reference lists 33 types. They fall into groups:
- Text: text box, text area, email.
- Numbers: number input, slider, quantity, and a quantity grid for bulk orders.
- Choices: dropdown, radio button, switch, checkbox, button.
- Swatches: color swatch and image swatch.
- Measurements: length, area, volume, weight, dimension and a room map.
- Pickers and uploads: date, time, color and font pickers, plus file upload.
- The Product Designer: a full-screen design editor for products customers design themselves.
Display types such as headings, dividers and a popup for a size guide organize the form without collecting anything.
Do options and variants work together?
Yes. A swatch, dropdown, radio or button option can follow one of the product's Shopify options. The shopper's pick then selects the matching Shopify variant, so the price, photo, stock and cart follow it. Rules can also react to the product's Color or Size directly.
What happens at checkout?
The calculated price is applied automatically at checkout, and the order includes the customer's selections for fulfillment. See how checkout pricing works. To follow one product from your theme all the way to the order, read how Appify Custom Product Options works with Shopify.
How do you manage several options without the busywork?
A long list of options gets easier to handle with two habits and a rule.
- Describe it in chat. Chat with AI adds or changes options from plain English, such as "I sell custom blinds. Customers choose width, height, and material."
- Reorder and duplicate. Drag an option to move it. Duplicate one to keep all its settings, pricing and rules. The working with options guide covers both.
- Show fields only when they apply. Visibility rules show, hide or require an option based on another answer. Our guide to showing and hiding product options has examples.
How do you set up the app?
The overview puts it in five steps:
- Create a calculator in the app. The editor opens with Options & Pricing, with Chat with AI beside it.
- Add options: the fields your customers fill in.
- Define pricing formulas that read those options.
- Assign the calculator to one or more products.
- Publish. Customers see the form on the product page and the price updates as they choose.
Before you start, switch on the app embed in your theme. The theme setup guide takes a couple of minutes, and creating your first calculator walks through the editor.
What does a finished example look like?
A custom sign shop adds a text box for the sign text, a dropdown for material, a dimensions option for width and height, and a color swatch. Size goes above color in the list, because customers think about size before color.
That is four fields on one product page. For pricing a product like this, see how to price complex custom products on Shopify.
