How to Let Customers Edit Configured Products in the Shopify Cart

A cart item for a 24 x 36 inch poster with an Edit options button, leading to an editor where the size is changed to 18 x 24 inches and an Update button

A customer adds a 24 by 36 inch poster to the cart. Then they measure the wall and realize they need 18 by 24. What can they do from the cart?

In a standard Shopify cart, not much. They can change the quantity or remove the line. To fix the size, they go back to the product page and configure everything again from a blank form.

Appify Custom Product Options adds an Edit options button to each configured line in the cart. It reopens the calculator with every choice filled in. The customer changes the size, clicks Update, and the line is replaced with the new configuration and the new price.

Why can't customers edit options in the Shopify cart?

Shopify's cart treats a line as a product, a variant and a quantity. The options a customer chose, like width, fabric or engraving text, ride along on the line as saved details.

The cart shows those details, but it has no way to reopen them. So a small change means removing the line and building the product again from scratch.

For a simple product that's a minor chore. For a configured one, with measurements, a material, a finish and uploaded artwork, it's where a sale goes quiet. The customer never complains, they just don't come back.

How Edit options works in the cart

Here's what the shopper sees on the cart page or in the cart drawer:

  1. Each configured line shows an Edit options button.
  2. They click it, and a full-screen editor opens on your calculator with their saved selections filled in, quantity included.
  3. They change what they need: a size, a material, a font, or the design itself.
  4. They click Update. The old line is replaced with the new one and the cart reloads. Cancel or Close leaves the cart exactly as it was.

If the product has Shopify variants, like Material or Color, those appear as dropdowns at the top of the editor. Changing one updates the variant on the line.

What happens to the price when a customer edits?

The editor is your calculator, so the updated line is priced by the same formulas, pricing tables and quantity discounts as the product page.

Say a customer drops a sign from 48 by 24 inches to 36 by 24. The calculator reprices the smaller size, and Update puts that price on the new line. Nobody recalculates anything by hand.

Fixed fees follow the product. If the line carries a setup fee line, Update replaces the fee together with the product, so the cart never ends up with a stray fee.

Can customers change their design in the cart too?

Yes. Edit options covers the design as well as the options. Want a different font on an engraving, or a new photo on a print? The customer opens the editor from the cart, makes the change, and updates the line.

For shops using the Product Designer, that matters. The design is the product, and the proof and print files on the order come from it.

The configuration survives the cart. A change of mind costs the customer a quick edit, not a whole product rebuilt from a blank form.

What if you changed the calculator after they added the item?

The editor always opens on your current published calculator. If you've changed it since the customer added the item, they see a short review message and check their filled-in options before they update.

So a new rate or a new material reaches the edited line, and the customer confirms what they're buying.

How do you turn on Edit options?

New calculators have it on already. For an older calculator:

  1. Open the calculator and go to Optional Features.
  2. Find Cart edit and check Allow edit from cart.
  3. Save and publish the calculator.

Each calculator has its own setting, so you choose which products get it. Dawn-family and Horizon-family themes show the button on the cart page and cart drawer with no theme code.

On another theme, one attribute on the cart row puts the button in place. The same attribute is listed on the Cart edit card in the app.

Where else does Edit options show up?

Lines that come back through a reorder or a restored abandoned cart can show Edit options too. A customer reordering last year's blind can make it two inches wider before checkout, without starting over.

After checkout, your team sees every option, proof and design file in the app's Orders tab. Print shops can see what lands with each order in the file formats print vendors need from custom orders.

What if you change the calculator while it's in someone's cart?

Edit options opens the calculator you have published right now, not a copy frozen when the item went into the cart. If you changed a rate or added a material in between, that is what the customer sees when they open it.

Their own selections still come back filled in, quantity included. When the calculator has changed since they added the item, they get a short review message first, so nothing shifts behind their back.

The practical effect: a cart that has been sitting for a week doesn't check out at last week's prices.
