Shopify's own product options cover choices like size, color and material. To let customers design the product itself, you add a design tool to the product page with an app.
There are two kinds. A personalizer puts the customer's text or photo on your product image with a live preview. A product designer gives them a full canvas to lay out text, clipart and images on the real product size, and hands you print-ready files.
Appify Custom Product Options has both, and prices the design with the same calculator as every other option. Here's how to set it up.
Personalizer or Product Designer: which do you need?
Most options apps have no design canvas at all. Some have a personalizer. Appify Custom Product Options has both, and they solve different jobs.
- Personalization shows the customer's choices as layers on your product photo. They type a name, pick a color or upload a logo, and the photo updates. A proof image of the final look is saved with the order.
- The Product Designer opens a full-screen editor on an artboard sized by the customer's options. It's built for products where the design is the product: stickers, signs, wallpaper, prints.
| What you sell | The right tool |
|---|---|
| Engraved mugs, name necklaces, a logo on a shirt photo | Personalization |
| Custom stickers in the customer's shape and size | Product Designer |
| Business cards and double-sided signs designed from scratch | Product Designer |
| Wallpaper sized to the customer's wall | Product Designer in Product preview mode |
| Photo prints | Product Designer in Image Edit mode |
You can use both on one product. A sign shop might show quick text on a sign photo and offer the full designer for customers who need bleed and a cut line.
How to add a design tool, step by step
1. Build the options and the price first
Size, material, finish and quantity come first, since they set the canvas and the price. Tell Chat with AI what you sell and how you price it, and it builds the options, formulas and discounts for you.
2. Add a Product Designer option
In Options & Pricing, add a Product Designer option. It shows on the page as a button, like "Customize Your Sticker."
- Required means nobody adds to cart without a saved design.
- Link it to a file upload and it opens in Image Edit mode, for cropping and adjusting a photo the customer uploaded.
- Two buttons work too: one to edit a photo, one to design from scratch.
3. Pick the tools customers get
In the Designer step, turn on only the tools the product needs, in the order customers should see them.
| Tool | What the customer does |
|---|---|
| Text | Adds wording in the fonts you allow |
| Clipart | Picks graphics from the catalog or your own library |
| Image Upload | Adds their own photos and logos |
| Shapes, Frames, Draw | Adds shapes, borders and masks, or marks up a photo |
| Layers | Reorders, hides and deletes elements |
| Crop, Finetune, Filter | Reframes and adjusts images |
You can also let customers remove a photo's background with AI. A sticker shop might start with Text first, since most customers begin by adding a name.
4. Decide how much customers can change
Three access levels cover most products:
- Full editing: every tool you turned on. The usual choice for stickers and signs.
- Product preview: the canvas follows the options, and customers use only the tools you pick. Wallpaper uses this, so the customer pans the pattern on their wall size.
- Display only: the options decide the design and the customer just confirms it.
5. Connect the options to the canvas
Canvas bindings make the editor follow the calculator. Change an option and the canvas changes with it.
- Width and Height set the artboard size.
- A Shape swatch sets the cut line: rectangle, circle, rounded, star, or a die-cut traced around the artwork.
- A Material swatch sets the background, including transparent for clear stickers.
- A finish can show as Glossy, Matte or Glitter when the customer clicks Preview.
- A Sides choice can turn on a back side for double-sided signs and cards.
Sizes can come from a pricing variable too, so feet and inches entered separately still size the canvas correctly.
6. Add your fonts and clipart
Upload your own clipart and fonts once for the whole shop. Then choose which Google fonts, custom fonts and clipart each product shows, and hide the rest.
7. Add a review step and choose the files you want
With the design review workflow on, customers see a preview and tick I have reviewed and approve my design before they can save. Every save makes a proof. Then pick the other files you want: a print-ready PNG with bleed, a cut-line SVG and a production manifest.
What does the customer see?
A button on the product page. It stays disabled until required options like size are filled in. Click it and the full-screen editor opens at their size, with their choices already applied.
- Guides on the canvas: black for the trim or cut, cyan for bleed, green for the safe zone.
- The price beside the design: the right panel shows the options you exposed and the live total.
- Built for phones: under about 768px wide, tools move to a bar at the bottom and the canvas fills the screen.
- Nothing lost: a saved draft can be restored, and a saved design can be reopened before add to cart.
When they save, the button shows a checkmark and a thumbnail of their proof. Change the size later, and they're asked to check the design again.
The design and the price live in one app. The canvas size, the cut line and the total all come from the same options. A customer who makes the sticker bigger sees the bigger sticker and the new price in the same moment.
Pricing a product customers design
The design tool is only half the job. The price still has to be right for every size, material and quantity the customer picks.
Most apps stop at a fixed amount per choice or a simple area price. Appify Custom Product Options prices the design the way you quote it:
- Formulas that read the size, material and anything else the customer picked.
- Pricing variables like AREA, written once and reused in any formula or rule.
- Pricing tables that hold your rate sheet and look up the customer's size.
- Quantity breaks, fees and a minimum price on top.
There's more in what formula pricing actually means.
What arrives with the order
Each saved design attaches one Design Files link to the order line. It opens the proof, the print files, the cut line and the production manifest. Front and back designs sit in separate sections on the same page. It's the part that turns a design into a job production can start right away. More on that in why custom orders take so long to fulfill.
For what printers expect in those files, see what file formats print vendors need from custom orders.
Examples by product
