Out of the box, Shopify's order confirmation email, staff new-order notification and packing slip don't list the options a customer chose in Appify Custom Product Options. They show the product name and variant. The width, material and engraving text are saved with the order, but nobody reads them there.
You fix that once per template. After that, the customer sees their own choices in their confirmation, your staff see them in the new-order email, and the person packing the box sees them on the slip.
Who needs to see the options, and where?
| Who | Where they read it | What it saves you |
|---|---|---|
| The customer | Order confirmation email | "Is this the size I picked?" emails |
| You and your team | Staff new-order notification | Opening every order to see what to make |
| Whoever packs the order | Packing slip | Checking the right material went in the box |
| Production | The app's Orders page | Hunting for the proof and the print file |
Each one works from the same saved selections, so what the customer chose is what everyone downstream reads.
What gets printed on those lines?
The emails and the slip print the line's cart properties, so you decide what shows by setting those once. In the calculator, open Optional Features, then Cart properties.
- Pick the rows. Eligible options appear automatically. Uncheck an option to keep it on the product page and off the order.
- Set the order. Use the arrows. That order is what the customer and your team read.
-
Add a computed value. Choose a variable such as area, give it a name customers understand, and format it, for example
{result} m². - Keep a row for your team only. Mark it Admin only. Customers don't see it in the cart or at checkout, the Appify snippets skip it in the emails and on the packing slip, and it appears in an Admin only group on the app's Orders page.
A staff-only notes option used in a formula is a good example. Uncheck it and it never reaches the customer's email or the packing slip.
One list controls all three documents. Reorder the rows or hide one in Cart properties, and the confirmation email, the staff notification and the packing slip follow.
How do you show options in the order confirmation email?
Customers see their options as labeled lines under each product, such as "Width: 48 inches" and "Fabric: Premium Linen".
The template lives in Shopify admin under Settings, Notifications, Order confirmation, Edit code. Shopify doesn't let apps read this template, so you paste the code yourself. The order confirmation guide gives the snippet and tells you where it goes.
Shopify keeps several order-summary layouts in that one file, so the snippet goes under every product title you find.
You don't have to do this by hand. On the Appify Custom Product Options dashboard, the setup card for Order confirmation email opens the Shopify editor. Copy the Email body (HTML) into Update with AI, then copy the result back into Shopify and save.
Give Shopify about 30 seconds after saving, then place a test order.
The same guide adds a Reorder this item link under each line. What that does, and why Shopify's own Buy again can't, is in why Shopify's Buy again button drops custom options.
How do you show options on the staff new-order email?
Your team gets the new-order email the moment a customer pays. With the options in it, they see the dimensions, materials and engraving text without opening the order.
- In Shopify admin, go to Settings, Notifications. Under Staff order notifications, open New order.
- Click Edit code, then search the Email body (HTML) for
component.variant.title. - Paste the snippet from the staff notification guide straight after the closing tag that follows that line.
- Save and wait about 30 seconds.
Each option prints as its own line under the product name. Names that start with an underscore stay hidden, so internal fields never show up.
If the search finds nothing, your template differs from Shopify's default. Paste the snippet under the product title you can see in the code instead.
How do you show options on packing slips?
The packing slip is the last check before the box closes. With the options printed on it, whoever packs the order can see that a 48 inch blind in Premium Linen, or a gift with "Happy Anniversary" in a script font, matches what's on the table.
- In Shopify admin, go to Settings, Shipping and delivery. Under Documents, open Packing slip template and click Edit.
- Search the template for
line_item.groups. - Paste the snippet from the packing slip guide after the closing tag of that loop, before the closing paragraph tag.
- Save.
The snippet reuses the slip's own line styling, so the options match the other item details.
Which language do the documents use?
If your store sells in more than one language, the cart property settings decide it. Send cart options in the customer's language is off by default. Off keeps option names and values in your default language on the Shopify cart, checkout and packing slips.
Turn it on and a French shopper sees Largeur on their order. On the app's Orders page, your staff can switch between the customer's language and your default language when they need the original labels. The full multi-language setup is in how to translate product options and calculators.
What does production see in the app?
Emails and slips carry the text of the choices. Files live in the app. Open Orders and click an order, and each line has its options in a table, a proof thumbnail when there is one, and Open file and Open proof links for uploads and design files.
A print shop's morning is short. Read the new-order emails, print the slips, then open each order in the app for the proof and the print-ready file.
The Orders page guide covers the screen, and how to review custom orders with proofs and design files covers the review step before checkout. If slow orders are the real problem, why custom product orders take so long to fulfill goes through the whole chain.
Recovery emails follow the same pattern. The abandoned checkout email takes its own paste, covered in abandoned cart recovery that keeps product customizations.
FAQ
Why don't my custom options show in Shopify order emails?
Shopify's default templates print the product name and variant, not the line's custom options. Paste the Appify Custom Product Options snippet into the template and the options print as labeled lines.
Where do I add custom options to the packing slip?
In Shopify admin, open Settings, Shipping and delivery, then Documents and Packing slip template. Add the snippet after the loop that follows line_item.groups.
Can I show options to staff but not to customers?
Yes. Mark the row Admin only in Cart properties. Your team sees it on the app's Orders page, the customer doesn't see it in the cart or at checkout, and the Appify snippets leave it out of emails and packing slips.
Do I have to edit the code by hand?
For the order confirmation email, no. The dashboard setup card and Update with AI make the edit for you. The staff email and packing slip each take one paste.
How long until the change shows up?
Give the email templates about 30 seconds after you save, then send yourself a test order.
