Most Shopify flooring calculators ask for a length and a width, or just the total square footage. That works for a bedroom. It doesn't work for an L-shaped kitchen, a room with an angled wall, or a job that covers three rooms at once.
For those, the customer has to split the floor into rectangles, work out each one and add them up, then type the answer in. Every extra step is a chance to order short.
Appify Custom Product Options has a Room map option built for this. Customers draw each room by typing its wall lengths, or start from a rectangle or an L. The calculator totals the square footage across every room and prices it with your rate and waste. A picture of the rooms comes with the order.
Why does length × width fall short for real floors?
A length and a width describe one rectangle. Plenty of real jobs aren't, like a hallway that turns a corner or a family room and a kitchen in the same order. A square footage box is no better. It just hands all the math to the customer.
Either way, the customer ends up doing geometry on their phone. They guess and order short, or they give up and email you for a quote.
A Room map measures the floor the way it's shaped. Rectangles, L-shapes, angled walls and several rooms in one order, all typed in on your product page. The price comes from the real total, not the customer's best guess.
What does the customer see with a Room map?
The customer names a room and types its walls in order. The outline draws itself as they go, and each room shows its perimeter and square footage beside its name. The total for every room sits under the map.
Try it yourself on the Flooring by the Room demo. Pick a floor, draw a room, and watch the area and the price update.
Start from a shape
Most rooms fit a shape. A rectangle only needs a length and a width. An L-shape has six walls, but the customer only types four. The two long sides fill in to match the walls across from them, so the room always closes.
Or walk it wall by wall
For anything else, the customer picks the custom shape and types each wall in turn: its length, and the turn into it. A turn can be left, right, or an exact angle for a wall that isn't square.
When the last wall points back to the start, Close finishes the room and its area counts toward the total.
Add every room in the job
- More rooms: Add room starts the next one. The totals cover every room, and Fit zooms out to show them all.
- Their units: feet, feet and inches, inches, centimetres or meters. Feet and inches read the way people write them, like 12' 6".
How is the floor priced?
A Room map gives your pricing three numbers: the total area, the total perimeter, and how many rooms were measured. Flooring uses the area.
Take the two rooms above. 590.9 square feet plus 10% for waste is about 650 square feet to price. As a formula, that's the room map's area, times 1.1 for waste, times your rate per square foot (4.50 here):
INPUT("ROOM", "area") * 1.1 * 4.50
Waste can also be the customer's choice. In the demo, an Add Waste Material dropdown offers no waste or 5% to 20%, and the summary shows the room area, the waste and the total area before the price.
Sell by the carton instead? The same area feeds the carton math: add waste, divide by the square feet in a carton, and round up to whole cartons. Our guide to selling flooring on Shopify walks through it step by step.
The rest of the pricing works on top
The area is a number like any other, so the full pricing engine in Appify Custom Product Options still applies:
- Pricing variables: save the room total once as a variable like AREA, and use it in any formula or rule.
- A rate for every floor: a pricing table holds each floor's rate, so one calculator prices the whole range.
- Bigger jobs: an IF in the formula can use a lower rate once AREA passes 1,000 square feet.
- Trim from the same map: the perimeter is there too, so baseboard or trim can be priced by the foot without asking again.
- Fees and a minimum: a delivery fee charged once and never discounted, and a minimum price so a small closet still pays.

What arrives with the order?
The cart line keeps the whole walk: each room's name, every wall and turn, the perimeter and the area. Add to cart also attaches a Room map image link, one picture of all the rooms.
So you, or your installer, see the shape of the job, not two numbers. The product photo stays your product photo.
How do you set up a Room map?
Ask Chat with AI
Describe it the way you'd explain it to a new hire. For example: "Add a room map in feet and inches for flooring. Allow rectangle and L-shape, up to five rooms, and price it at our rate per square foot with 10% waste."
Chat with AI adds a Room map instead of width and height boxes, and writes the pricing. Ask for changes the same way later. If a price ever looks off, tell it the number you expected and it opens the Troubleshoot tab with those choices loaded.
Or add it by hand
Go to Options & Pricing, click + Add option and choose Room map. These are the settings that matter:
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Unit | Feet, feet and inches, inches, centimetres or meters for the whole map. |
| Require a closed shape | Add to cart waits until every room is closed. Turn it off for an open run, like a fence. |
| Minimum rooms | How many rooms the customer starts with. |
| Maximum rooms | The most rooms they can add. Set it to 1 for a single room. |
| Allowed shapes | Custom, rectangle and L-shape. Allow just one and the shape picker disappears. |
The words on the map, like Wall, Close and Perimeter, come already translated for every language you sell in.
What else can a Room map price?
Anything priced from a real space:
- Fencing: turn off the closed shape, allow one run, and price by the perimeter.
- Baseboard and trim: price by the perimeter of every room.
- Turf: price by the area, the same way as a floor.
- Multi-room installs: add a charge for each room measured, on top of the area.
FAQ
Can customers measure an L-shaped room on Shopify?
Yes. With a Room map in Appify Custom Product Options, they pick the L-shape and type four lengths. The other two fill in, and the calculator works out the square footage.
Can one order cover several rooms?
Yes. Customers add each room to the same map, and the price uses the total area across all of them.
What about a room with an angled wall?
Use the custom shape. The customer types each wall's length and the turn into it, including an exact angle.
Does it work in metric?
Yes. Choose centimetres or meters as the unit, and the area shows in square meters.
Can I still sell flooring by the carton?
Yes. The total area feeds your carton formula: add waste, divide by the square feet in a carton, and round up to whole cartons.
What do I see on the order?
Every room, wall, turn, perimeter and area on the line item, plus a link to a picture of all the rooms.
Every room priced the way it's actually shaped.
