How to Sell Custom Stickers With a Design Studio on Shopify

A custom sticker has to be priced right and cut right, and both are decided on the product page.

Selling them with a design studio on Shopify takes a calculator that prices every size and quantity, and a canvas where the customer builds the sticker at its real size. Appify Custom Product Options does both in one app.

Customers pick their options, design the sticker in the built-in Product Designer, choose a die-cut traced around their artwork and approve a proof. Set it up once, and each order can arrive with a print-ready PNG and a cut-line SVG. Here's how.

Set up the sticker choices

Start with the choices that change the sticker or its price. Open the Custom Stickers demo to see a typical set: sizes from 1 by 1 inch to 6 by 6, or a custom width and height, plus quantity choices, finishes and shapes. For your own shop, a typical setup looks like this:

  • Size. Preset sizes as buttons, with a Custom choice that opens width and height fields.
  • Shape. A swatch with circle, square, rounded, oval, star and a die-cut that follows the artwork.
  • Material and finish. Swatches for vinyl, clear, holographic, glitter and whatever else you stock.
  • Quantity. Buttons for your usual runs, plus a custom amount.

Rules keep the combinations sensible. A value rule can force the finish to Matte for custom shapes. A visibility rule can hide Rush unless the size is 2 or 3 inches.

You don't have to build any of this by hand. Tell Chat with AI what you sell and how you price it, or attach your price sheet. It adds the options, the pricing, the quantity discounts and the rules, and it can generate matching icons for your shape and finish swatches.

Price stickers by size and quantity

There are two common ways to set up the price, depending on how you quote today.

Your price sheet, as written

If you already quote from a grid, put it in a pricing table with sizes down the side and quantities across the top. The calculator looks up the customer's size and quantity and returns that cell.

For custom sizes and odd quantities, key the size side by a number, such as the longer side or the area. Then set the lookup mode to round up to the next size, round down, or Interpolate, which blends between the cells around it.

A price per sticker from the area

Or price the sticker from its area. A pricing variable such as AREA works out the square inches once, and every formula and rule can reuse it. A table turns the area into a price per sticker, and a second table can hold a rate for each material.

Then add quantity discount rules for the volume breaks. The Stickers by Buttons demo runs from 25% off at 100 stickers to 85% off at 10,000. The breaks can depend on size too, so small and large stickers get different discounts at the same quantity.

The rest of a sticker shop's pricing

You need How it's handled
A setup fee per design A fixed fee, never discounted
A minimum order value A minimum price in the total price formula
A surcharge on oversized stickers A price adjustment once the area passes your limit
The saving shown before they choose Inline prices on each quantity button, with a savings badge

If a price looks wrong, tell Chat with AI the number you expected. It opens the formula's Troubleshoot tab with those choices filled in. Our guide to tiered and volume pricing for custom products goes deeper on the breaks. Selling custom boxes too? Here's how to price custom boxes by dimensions.

Add the design studio

Most options apps have no design canvas at all. A personalizer puts a name or photo on a mockup, but the cut path and print files still get made by hand after the order. The Product Designer in Appify Custom Product Options builds the sticker at its real size and sends the cut line and print-ready file with the order.

Add a Product Designer option to the calculator and label it something like "Customize Your Sticker." Mark it Required, and nobody reaches the cart without a saved design.

Then connect the options to the canvas with canvas bindings:

  • Size sets the artboard. Width and height fields size it directly. Preset sizes map to a width and height each through a size chart.
  • Shape sets the cut line. Each shape choice maps to a rectangle, circle, oval, rounded rectangle, star, or an automatic die-cut.
  • Material sets the background. A clear vinyl choice can show a transparent background.

Die-cut stickers

Map your die-cut choice to Auto (die-cut). The editor traces the customer's uploaded artwork to build a cut line that follows its outline. Artwork with clear edges on a transparent or plain background traces best.

Customers with a photo can remove its background with AI background removal, then keep the cutout for a die-cut layout. For rounded and star shapes, you can also give customers a slider for the corner radius or the number of points.

Finishes they can see

A Preview Effect binding shows the finish when the customer clicks Preview. Built-in looks include Glossy, Mirror, Matte, Cracked Ice, Glitter, Pixie Dust and Prismatic, mapped to your material swatch.

For clear stickers, the canvas shows a checkerboard behind the art, and Preview draws the cut edge so they see how it reads on clear stock. These effects stay out of the print files.

Guides that prevent reprints

Turn on the ruler in inches and the bleed and safe zone guides. The cut shows as a dashed black line, bleed in cyan and the safe zone in green, so customers keep text away from the edge.

Proofs before the sticker reaches the cart

Turn on the design review workflow. Save becomes Review Design, which shows the finished sticker with your review instructions beside it.

The customer has to tick I have reviewed and approve my design before Save Design unlocks. With the option required, every sticker in the cart has an approved proof.

  • Size changes reopen the proof. If the customer saves a 3 inch design and then switches to 4 inches, the saved state resets and they check the design again.
  • Low-resolution warnings. Customers are warned while they work when an upload doesn't have enough pixels for the print size.
  • Notes for production. A comment button lets them add instructions, which land on the order as Production Notes.

What arrives with each order

Each saved design adds one Design Files link to the order line. It opens every file you switched on in production output:

  • Proof PNG of the approved design.
  • Print-ready PNG with bleed, exported at 300 DPI by default.
  • Cut-line SVG, the vector path your cutter or plotter follows on die-cut and kiss-cut jobs.
  • Production manifest with layer positions, sizes and every option the customer chose.

The app's Orders tab shows each line with its proof thumbnail, options table and file links, without digging through Shopify line properties. For what printers expect in these files, see what file formats print vendors need from custom orders.

Cart edits and repeat orders

A customer who wants more stickers or a different finish can tap Edit options in the cart and change the options or the design, without starting over.

Shopify's own Buy again button drops the configuration, so the app adds a reorder option that brings the line back with the original options filled in. Here's why Buy again drops custom options and what to use instead.

FAQ

Can customers design their own stickers on Shopify?

Not with Shopify alone. An app adds the design canvas. Appify Custom Product Options includes the Product Designer, a full-screen editor sized to the sticker the customer ordered.

How do die-cut stickers get a cut line?

Map the die-cut shape to Auto (die-cut). The editor traces the uploaded artwork, and the cut-line SVG is saved with the order.

Can I price stickers from my existing size and quantity sheet?

Yes. Put the grid in a pricing table with sizes down the side and quantities across the top, or attach the sheet to Chat with AI and ask it to build the pricing.

Can customers see holographic or clear finishes before they order?

Yes. Map your materials to built-in finish previews such as Glitter, Mirror or Prismatic, and set clear vinyl to a transparent background.

Can I require proof approval before checkout?

Yes. Make the Product Designer option required and turn on the design review workflow. The customer must tick the approval box before the design saves.
