To sell made-to-measure cabinet doors on Shopify with Appify Custom Product Options, keep the wood as product variants and put the rest in one calculator. The shopper types a width and a height, and the calculator prices the door by its area.
Finish, frame and boring choices carry their own prices. A surcharge covers tall doors. Options like primer color and hinge side show only when they apply.
The Cabinet Doors demo on our demo store works this way. This guide uses it to walk through the decisions a door seller makes, in the order you'd make them.
What does a cabinet door seller need to decide?
Here are seven decisions, and how the demo answers each one.
| Decision | How the Cabinet Doors demo answers it |
|---|---|
| What sizes can you build? | Width from 9.5 to 26 inches, height from 9.5 to 85, shown under each field |
| How does the wood set the price? | Each wood is a Shopify variant, and its price is the rate per square foot |
| What does the finish cost? | A price on each finish choice: 29 for Prime Only, 49 for Clear Coat, Color and Stain |
| What do frames and boring cost? | 29 or 49 for a French frame, 9 for a bore pattern, 19 for Lazy Susan |
| What do you charge for a tall door? | A flat 99 added when the height is over 60 inches |
| What should the shopper see? | Primer, color, stain and boring details appear only after the choice that needs them |
| What does the shop floor need? | Bore pattern, boring location, hinge side and notes, all on the order |
Prices are the demo's own, in dollars. Yours will differ.
How do you price the door itself?
Start with the wood. Add one Shopify variant per wood. The demo's Cherry variant is priced at 22, and its formula reads that price as the rate per square foot.
Then add a Dimensions option with two rows, Width and Height, in inches. Its formula multiplies the two, divides by 144 to get square feet, and multiplies by the variant price. Chat with AI can write the line from a sentence like "price a door by its area at the wood's rate".
The demo's summary shows the result as its own line. An 18 by 30 inch door in Cherry is 3.75 square feet, so the Dimensions line reads 82.50. Make it 18 by 70 and the line reads 192.50.
Set a minimum and a maximum on each row. The allowed range appears under the field, so nobody orders a door you don't make.
How do you price finishes, frames and boring?
Put the price on the choice. Each value in a dropdown carries its own amount, so the finish list needs no formula at all.
- Finish: Prime Only is 29. Clear Coat, Color and Stain are 49 each.
- Glass frame: None and Glass Ready Frame are free. A French 4 lite frame adds 29 and a French 6 lite frame adds 49.
- Boring: the A, B, U and T bore patterns add 9 each. Lazy Susan adds 19.
Need a new finish? Add one more value to the list. The wood stays a variant and everything else stays an option, so you never build a product for each combination. For more on prices that depend on other choices, see conditional pricing rules on Shopify.
How do you show only what applies?
Doors have a lot of options, and most shoppers need a few of them. A Show if rule keeps each extra out of sight until the choice that needs it.
- Pick Prime Only and three primer buttons appear: black, grey and white.
- Pick Color and a color field appears. Pick Stain and four stain swatches appear.
- Pick any boring and the boring location and hinge side appear. Pick Lazy Susan and a second dropdown asks which bore pattern to use.
- Pick a custom stile and rail size, or a custom boring location, and a note box opens for the details.
A hidden option adds nothing to the price, so a shopper who changes their mind never pays for something they can't see. The idea is covered in how to show or hide product options based on a customer's choices.
One rule per extra, not one product per combination. A door in several woods, four finishes, four frames and six boring choices would need hundreds of variants if each combination were one. Here the woods are the only variants.
How do you charge more for a tall door?
Use a price adjustment. It adds an amount when a condition is true. The demo's rule reads: if the height is greater than 60, add 99.
The adjustment sits outside the area formula, so the formula stays short. To change the limit or the amount, edit one rule and every door reprices.
What does the shop floor get with the order?
The shopper's choices travel with the cart line: size, wood, finish, bore pattern, hinge side and any notes. The person building the door reads them without a back-and-forth email. Your team sees the same details in the app's Orders tab.
Two things help after the order. Edit options lets a shopper fix a typed size in the cart before they pay. And Appify Reorder brings a past door back with every choice filled in, where Shopify's own Buy again drops them.
What about a whole kitchen?
A kitchen is a dozen doors, often of the same size. The demo has a Quantity field, and quantity discount rules can lower the price from a count you set. If your prices step up by size band instead of by area, a pricing table does the lookup. How to price from a 2D pricing table or rate sheet shows how, and tiered and volume pricing for custom products covers the discounts.
Build it with Chat with AI
Describe your door shop to Chat with AI in your own words. A starting prompt:
"I sell cabinet doors made to size. The wood is a Shopify variant and its price is my rate per square foot. Add width and height in inches, from 9.5 to 26 wide and 9.5 to 85 tall, and price the door by its area at the wood's rate. Add a Finish dropdown, a glass frame dropdown and a boring dropdown with their own prices. Show primer, stain and hinge options only when they apply. Add 99 when the height is over 60 inches."
Then test before you publish. Switch the preview between Draft, Saved and Published, and enter a door you've already quoted by hand.
If a number looks off, Price looks wrong? opens the Troubleshoot tab for those exact choices. For one finished calculator, read inside a Shopify cabinet door calculator. Selling blinds or shades instead? How to sell made-to-measure blinds on Shopify follows the same pattern. Garage doors work much the same way, with a size price list turned into a pricing table.
