Inside a Shopify Yard Sign Calculator: Size, Material and Quantity Breaks

A yard sign's price starts with its size and material. Then the order quantity takes some off.

This is a look inside the Yard Sign calculator on our Shopify demo store. It's built with Appify Custom Product Options.

The shopper picks a size, a material, single or double-sided, and a stake. The material is priced by the square foot, so a bigger sign costs more. Order more signs and the price per sign drops.

What it does

Three standard sizes and a Custom button sit at the top. Below them come the material, the sides and the stake as picture swatches. Then there's an optional logo upload, the quantity, and an Open Sign Designer button.

Yard sign calculator with sign size buttons for 12 by 18, 18 by 24 and 24 by 36 inches plus Custom, swatches for corrugated plastic, PVC and aluminum, single or double-sided, four stake choices, a logo upload, a quantity dropdown and an Open Sign Designer button
Size, material, sides and stake, then quantity.

In plain words, one sign costs its area in square feet times the material's rate, plus the sides and the stake. The quantity break then comes off the whole line.

Why a yard sign calculator is hard to build

  • The material price has to follow the size. In a basic options app, PVC adds the same fixed amount to a 12 by 18 sign as to a 24 by 36, four times the area. You overcharge the small sign or lose money on the big one. Here the material is priced from the size the shopper picked.
  • Some extras don't care about size. A stake costs the same under any sign, and so does double-sided printing on this demo. Those stay as plain prices per choice.
  • Volume breaks have to be automatic. Quantity discount rules take 10% off at 5 signs, rising to 40% at 200. The discount is applied at checkout, with no code.
  • Shoppers want to see the break before they pick. The quantity dropdown shows the line price and the saving beside every quantity.
  • The artwork has to come with the order. A logo upload and an Open Sign Designer button sit in the same calculator as the price.

One price, worked out

Here's an 18 by 24 inch PVC sign, double-sided, with a Pro Stake, ordered 10 times, with prices in dollars.

  • Area: 18 by 24 inches is 432 square inches, or 3 square feet.
  • Material: 3 square feet of PVC at 129 a square foot is 387.
  • Sides and stake: double-sided adds 25 and the Pro Stake adds 39, so one sign is 451.
  • Quantity: 10 signs is 4,510 before the break, and 10 signs get 15% off.

The calculator shows 451 for one sign and 3,833.50 for ten. The quantity dropdown lists ten at 3,833.50 with the 15% saving beside it.

The default sign is cheaper. A single-sided 12 by 18 corrugated plastic sign with no stake comes to 133.50.

The design decisions

The size buttons hold the area, not a price

Each standard size button carries its area in square inches: 216, 432 or 864. The total price formula adds up only the material, the sides and the stake. So the size never adds money by itself.

The shopper sees inches on the buttons. The formulas see a number they can multiply.

The material reads the size

Each material choice has an option formula. It divides the size's square inches by 144 to get square feet, then multiplies by that material's rate. Corrugated plastic, PVC and aluminum each have their own rate.

Change a rate and every size updates at once. There's no price list per size to keep in step.

The material is priced by the square foot, not as a flat amount. Aluminum on a 24 by 36 sign costs four times what it does on a 12 by 18. The formula reads the size first.

Flat extras stay flat

Double-sided, double-sided with a different image, and the three stakes are plain prices per choice. They don't change with the size.

The calculator prices per unit, so every part of one sign is multiplied by the quantity.

Breaks that grow with the order

The discount tiers are percent off: 10% at 5 signs, 15% at 10, 20% at 25, 25% at 50, 30% at 100, 35% at 150 and 40% at 200. The highest tier the order reaches is the one that applies. Which quantity counts toward a tier is a setting too, covered in tiered and volume pricing for custom products.

Each cart line qualifies on its own, so a second sign design starts its own count.

Prices beside every quantity

The quantity dropdown has inline prices turned on. Each row shows the line total for that quantity and the saving, such as "10 · 1,134.75 (-15%)" for the default sign.

The shopper can compare quantities before they pick one.

What arrives with the order

The calculated price goes to checkout on one cart line, with the quantity break taken off as a line discount. No size or material becomes a Shopify variant.

Cart properties carry the size, material, sides and stake to the order.

Customers can tap Edit options in the cart to switch to aluminum without starting over. Later, Appify Reorder brings the sign back with every choice filled in, where Shopify's own Buy again drops them.

Make it yours

  • Give big signs smaller breaks. Put the sign's area in a pricing variable and switch the discount to 2D on it. Ten small signs can then get a deeper cut than ten large ones.
  • Add a setup fee. A fixed fee for artwork setup is never discounted, so the quantity break comes off the signs only.
  • Offer rush printing. A fixed fee with a formula can apply only when the shopper picks Rush.
