Inside a Shopify Quantity Discount Calculator That Also Looks at Size (Quantity Discount 2D)

The Quantity Discount 2D demo shows a discount that depends on two things at once: how many stickers a shopper orders, and how big each sticker is. It runs on Appify Custom Product Options.

A 6 by 8 inch sticker, 500 pieces, gets 20% off and totals 200.00 with prices in dollars, or 0.40 each. The same 500 at 1 by 1 inch get 10% off. This article explains the discount feature first, then how this calculator uses it.

What does the Quantity Discount 2D calculator do?

It sells stickers. The shopper picks a material, a size from three buttons or a typed custom size, and a quantity. Every quantity row shows its own discount badge and total, so the saving is visible before anything is chosen.

In this demo the base price is 0.50 per sticker, so everything that moves in the totals comes from the discount table.

What is a 2D quantity discount?

A normal quantity discount reads one number: the quantity. Order 100, get 15% off. That is the Simple (1D) mode. It is the right tool when every product in the calculator earns the same ladder.

The Advanced (2D) mode adds a second number, called the axis. It can be a width, a weight, an area or any numeric option or pricing variable. You split the axis into brackets (size bands), and each bracket carries its own ladder of quantity breaks. The shopper's size picks the bracket, and their quantity picks the row inside it.

You set it up in the Calculator Editor under Options & Pricing > Quantity Discount Rules, then Configure. One tier is three fields: a minimum quantity, a discount type and a value. The type can be percent off, amount off or a target unit price.

A 2D table lets a 12 inch sticker and a 1 inch sticker reach different discounts at the same count, and the shopper sees the right one live as they change either choice.

Which discount tool for which job?

You want Use
One "buy more, save more" ladder for everyone Simple (1D) tiers
A different ladder by size, weight or area Advanced (2D) brackets
A different ladder by choice, such as Vinyl and Paper Conditional tables. Each table can be 1D or 2D
The price itself to come from a grid of sizes and rates Pricing tables, read by the price formula

Why is a size-and-quantity discount hard to build, and how is it handled?

  • Two shoppers, one count, two different costs. 500 small stickers and 500 large ones are not the same job. Each size band has its own ladder, so the discount follows the size.
  • The size comes from two places. Some customers press a size button. Others type a width and length. One pricing variable reads whichever one was used, so the table needs only one axis.
  • The shopper has to see the saving before they commit. Each quantity row shows its total and a green badge, and they update when the size changes.
  • A table with nine bands and eight breaks is a lot to type. It can be pasted in from a spreadsheet.
  • The discount has to reach the order. It is applied at checkout as a line item discount with no code, and the customer can change their choices from the cart with Edit options.

How is one price worked out?

Take a 6 by 8 inch sticker, 500 of them. That is 48 square inches, which falls in the 36 to 72 band.

Step Working Result
Price each The calculator's base price 0.50
Subtotal 500 x 0.50 250.00
Quantity discount The 500 break in the 36 to 72 band 20% off
Total The calculator's own total 200.00, or 0.40 each
The price summary for 500 stickers showing a subtotal of 250.00, a 20 percent quantity discount, a total of 200.00 and a price per sticker of 0.40 with 0.50 struck through

Change the size to 1 by 1 inch and the same 500 pieces land in the smallest band. The discount drops to 10%.

What are the design decisions behind it?

One size number, read from either input

The size buttons hold a number for each choice, and the typed width and length are multiplied together. A pricing variable named AREA reads whichever the shopper used, and that variable is the table's axis. The width and length inputs only show when Custom is picked, using a Show if rule.

Nine size bands, eight quantity breaks

The bands run from the smallest sticker up to 400 square inches. Each has the same eight quantity breaks: 50, 100, 300, 500, 1000, 2000, 3000 and 5000. Here is how the ladder moves across six of the bands:

Size band (square inches) 50 pieces 500 pieces 2000 pieces
1 2% off 10% off 14% off
1 to 4 4% off 12% off 16% off
4 to 9 6% off 14% off 18% off
9 to 18 8% off 16% off 20% off
18 to 36 10% off 18% off 22% off
36 to 72 12% off 20% off 24% off

Bands may touch but never overlap. A blank cell means no discount at that quantity.

Typed in the form, or edited as a grid

The Configure window has a Form view and a Table view. In Table view the bands are rows and the quantity breaks are columns, and both views edit the same rules. A table copied from Excel or Google Sheets can be pasted straight in with Import table. The axis column must hold real numbers, such as 4 for a 2 by 2, not a label.

Percent off, set per cell

Every tier here is a percent off. The same table could use amount off or a target unit price instead, such as 1.25 each at 1000. The discount comes off the product price and is applied at checkout automatically. No discount code is involved, and it also shows in the price summary as the Quantity Discount line.

Per line, so cart quantity counts

The aggregation is set to Per line. Each cart line earns its tier on its own, and changing the cart quantity can move the line to a higher break. The other modes combine lines of the same product, combine lines across the calculator, or count only the quantity chosen in the calculator.

The saving shows beside every quantity

The quantity option is a list with price and discount shown inline, set to show the total. Each row gets a badge such as -10% and the line total. Custom is also offered, and it shows a live price once a valid quantity is typed.

What arrives with the order?

The cart line carries the material, size, dimensions and quantity, and the discount shows on that line. The same line appears in the Orders tab with its options.

A customer who wants 1000 instead of 500 taps Edit options in the cart. Their choices reopen filled in, and the discount follows the new quantity. The guide to editing in the cart has the setup.

How can you make it yours?

  • Price by size as well. Add an area rate or a pricing table and the discount table works on top of it unchanged.
  • Use a different axis. Swap area for width, weight or any numeric option, as in the metal sign example in the help doc.
  • Give each material its own schedule. Add a conditional table for a premium film and keep the rest on the default table.
  • Show the tiers on the product page. The quantity tiers block can display the schedule that matches the shopper's current choices.

How do you get this calculator?

Describe it to Chat with AI, check what it builds, and adjust the discount table in Configure. A starting prompt:

Build a sticker calculator with a material swatch, size buttons for 1 x 1, 2 x 2 and 3 x 3 inches plus a custom size with width and length in inches, and a quantity list of 50, 100, 300, 500, 1000 and 2000 with the total and discount shown on each row. Base price 0.50 per sticker. Use a 2D quantity discount on the size in square inches: bigger sizes get a deeper percent off at each quantity break.
