How to Price Custom Boxes and Packaging by Dimensions on Shopify

A custom box comes with three measurements, a material and a run size. The price has to follow every one of them.

In Appify Custom Product Options, the shopper enters length, width and height in one Dimensions option. A pricing variable turns those three numbers into whatever your price sheet works from, and a formula multiplies it by the rate for the material they picked. Quantity tiers price the run, a fixed fee covers setup, and a minimum price protects small orders.

The result is one cart line, and the calculated price is applied at checkout automatically.

Collect length, width and height in one field

The Dimensions option holds several named measurements together, which is what a custom box needs. Label the rows Length, Width and Height, pick the unit, and set a minimum, maximum and step for each row so entries stay inside the sizes you make.

Rules can read one measurement at a time. Show an insert option only when the height passes a set amount, or lock a choice for very small boxes with a value rule.

Turn the size into a price

Each measurement is available to formulas on its own: INPUT("BOX", "dim1") is the length, dim2 the width and dim3 the height. Combine them once in a pricing variable, using the math your price sheet already uses. Every formula, rule and tier can then read that one name.

The rate comes from a pricing table, with one row per material, matched to the shopper's choice. Tables are shared across your store, so one rate sheet can price every box product you sell.

If your supplier quotes set sizes instead of a rate, put that grid in a table and set the lookup to the nearest size up for anything in between. Our guide to formulas vs pricing tables covers when each one fits.

Height has to count. A deep box costs more to make than a flat one with the same footprint. Put all three measurements into the size variable, and the price follows the size of the box.

An example setup, worked out

Here's one way it could look, with prices in dollars. The rates are made up for the example, so swap in your own.

  • A size variable. VOLUME is length times width times height: INPUT("BOX", "dim1") * INPUT("BOX", "dim2") * INPUT("BOX", "dim3").
  • A material rate from a table. Say kraft is 0.005 per cubic inch of box.
  • A price per box. 0.60 plus the volume times the material rate, set to Per unit so the quantity multiplies it: 0.60 + VAR("VOLUME") * TABLE("material_rates", OPT_TOKEN("MATERIAL")).
  • One quantity break. 10% off from 250 boxes.
  • A setup fee. 45, added as a fixed fee.

A 10 by 8 by 4 inch box is 320 cubic inches. At 0.005 that's 1.60, plus 0.60, so 2.20 a box. 250 boxes come to 550.00, and the 10% break brings that to 495.00.

495.00 for the boxes plus the 45.00 setup fee: 540.00 for the order.

Price the run with quantity tiers

Set the breaks in Quantity Discount Rules. Each tier is a percent off, an amount off, or a target unit price, which sets the price per box at that break. If your sheet reads "100+ at 2.50 each, 500+ at 1.75, 1,000+ at 1.25", it goes in exactly like that.

Box size can change the breaks too. In Advanced (2D) mode, pick the size variable as the second axis and give each size band its own tiers, so small and large boxes follow separate ladders.

Offer the runs as quantity buttons and turn on Show price and discount inline. Each button can show its total, its price per box and a savings badge before the shopper picks.

The discount comes off automatically at checkout, with no code to hand out. To decide what counts toward a tier, or to paste breaks in from a spreadsheet, see tiered and volume pricing for custom products.

Setup fees, minimums and oversize boxes

  • Setup charges. Add them as a fixed fee. A fee can be conditional, so it applies only when the shopper picks printing, for example. Fees are never discounted, so a run discount comes off the boxes only.
  • A minimum price. Set one in the total price formula so a small box still covers your costs. More in how to set a minimum price for custom products.
  • Oversize surcharges. A price adjustment adds a charge once the size variable passes a limit you set.
  • Print and finish choices. Give each choice a price formula that reads the size variable, then add the choice to the box price formula, so printing on a bigger box costs more.

Shipping weight, SKUs and the order line

The same measurements that set the price can do the paperwork.

  • Weight. A weight formula can reuse the size variable and a weight per material from a table. The weight is saved with the order, so shipping rates can use it.
  • SKUs. Custom SKU rules build a code from the material choice and the measurements, like BOX-KRAFT-10x8x4.
  • The size on the cart line. Add the size variable in Cart properties with a template like {result} cu in, so the order shows it beside the dimensions.

Let AI build it from your price sheet

Open Chat with AI in the calculator editor and attach your rate sheet as a CSV or Excel file. Describe the box: three measurements, the materials you offer and the runs you sell. Chat with AI adds the options, pricing and quantity discounts, and the preview updates as it works.

Inside any formula, Describe with AI writes one from plain English, and Explain formula reads an existing one back in plain words.

When a price looks off, click Price looks wrong? under the preview price. The Troubleshoot tab shows what every part of the formula is worth for that box and names the likely issue. Or tell Chat with AI the price you expected, and it opens that tab with those choices already in the preview.

FAQ

Can Shopify price a custom box by length, width and height?

Yes, with Appify Custom Product Options. A Dimensions option collects all three, and a formula or pricing table turns them into a price per box.

Can I set a fixed price per box at each quantity?

Yes. Use target unit price tiers in Quantity Discount Rules, and Advanced (2D) mode if the breaks depend on box size.

Are setup fees discounted on bigger runs?

No. Fixed fees are charged in full. Quantity discounts apply to the product price only.

Can the box size set the shipping weight?

Yes. A weight formula can read the same measurements or the size variable.

Length, width, height and the run, all priced.
