Appify Custom Product Options works with Shopify's own pieces instead of replacing them. It connects to your theme through a theme app extension. Shoppers use your theme's regular Add to Cart button. The calculated price is applied at checkout. The shopper's choices travel on the cart line and stay on the order.
This guide follows one configured product from the product page to the order, so you can see what Shopify does at each step. If you are still deciding whether you need an app at all, start with what product options are on Shopify.
How does it connect to your theme?
The theme app extension is what puts your calculators on the storefront. It is made of one app embed and a set of theme blocks:
| Piece | What it does |
|---|---|
| App embed | Switches Appify Custom Product Options on across your storefront |
| Appify Calculator block | Shows the calculator on a product page, or on any other page by its Calculator ID |
| Appify Price Summary block | Shows the price breakdown as its own block |
| Appify Quantity Tiers block | Shows the quantity discount tiers you set up |
Block names as listed in the Appify Custom Product Options help docs.
The calculator sits on your own product page, inside your own theme.
For the cart, the app works with your theme's Add to Cart button. The calculated price and the shopper's selections go into the cart with the item.
What goes into the Shopify cart?
The shopper's choices attach to the cart line. Shopify calls these line item properties. They show on the cart, at checkout and on the order.
You decide what the line carries. In Cart properties you can:
- Choose which options are sent and put them in the order your team reads them.
- Add a computed value, such as area, with a name customers understand.
- Mark a row Admin only so your team sees it on the order and the customer does not.
- Send names and values in the shopper's language.
A shopper can change a line later. Edit options reopens the calculator with their selections filled in. The guide to editing configured products in the Shopify cart covers it.
How is the price set at checkout?
Checkout pricing is automatic. The customer is charged the amount your calculator computed, whatever the product's base Shopify price is. There are no discount codes to create and nothing to switch on.
Here is the path:
- The shopper fills in the calculator and clicks Add to Cart.
- Appify Custom Product Options saves their selections and the computed price with the cart item.
- At checkout, the price is adjusted to match the calculated total.
- The customer pays that amount, and the order carries their selections for fulfillment.
Take a picture frame with a base Shopify price of 0.00. The calculator works out 47.50 from the size and materials chosen. The customer is charged 47.50.
The customer is charged the amount your calculator computed. The live price the shopper watched while choosing options is covered in how to show a live price while customers choose options.
How do quantity discounts work in the cart?
You set the tiers once in Quantity Discount Rules, for example 10 to 49 units at 10% off and 50 or more at 20% off. Once the calculator is published, automatic discounts do the rest.
When a shopper adds a qualifying quantity, the discount shows on that cart line and applies at checkout. No code to type. You can add conditional tables, so different choices use different schedules, and each cart line uses the schedule that matched its configuration.
The Appify Quantity Tiers block lets shoppers see every break before they add to cart. The full set of options is in tiered and volume pricing for custom products.
How does it work with Shopify Markets?
Multi-currency switches on by itself when your store has Shopify Markets set up with more than one currency. There is nothing to configure inside the app. Your currency and market settings stay in Shopify.
When a shopper visits from a market with another currency, prices convert at your Shopify Markets rate. Catalog price adjustments you set per market are respected. The price summary, option prices, fees and totals all show the converted amount as it updates.
Language works the same way. A calculator can be translated into up to 10 languages, and the storefront picks the shopper's language. With the cart option on, the option names and values on the cart line follow that language too. The guide to selling in multiple languages and currencies walks through a full international setup.
What arrives with the order?
The order keeps the shopper's selections, so your team has what it needs to make the product. The app adds a second view on top of Shopify's.
- The Orders tab. It lists checkouts that include Appify Custom Product Options products. Each line shows its options, product image, proof and design or upload files, without digging through line item properties.
- Your language. When names are sent in the customer's language, you can switch the Orders page between theirs and yours.
- Emails and packing slips. The selections can print on staff emails and packing slips. The steps are in how to show custom options on order emails and packing slips.
- Staff orders. For a phone or in-person sale, you build the order in the app and send it to Shopify as a draft.
After the order, the saved configuration is what Reorder and cart recovery use. Shopify's Buy again adds only the variant, so Appify Reorder rebuilds the saved choices instead. See why Buy again drops custom options. For abandoned checkouts, Restore your cart brings back the whole cart with its options. That is covered in abandoned cart recovery that keeps customizations.
