How to Take Bulk Orders by Size and Color in One Cart Line on Shopify

A messy stack of separate cart cards on the left, a Quantity grid with Navy, White and Red rows and S, M, L, XL boxes in the middle, and one tidy cart line on the right, under the headline Bulk Orders by Size and Color in One Cart Line

To take bulk orders by size and color in one cart line, use a Quantity grid. It is an option type in Appify Custom Product Options. Colors run down the side, sizes run across the top, and the customer types a count in each box.

Everything goes to the cart at once, as one line. The total of every box is the order quantity, so your quantity discounts count the whole order, not one size at a time.

This guide covers what the shopper sees, how to set the grid up, how it prices, and what lands in the cart. You can try one on the T-Shirt Bulk Order demo.

What does a customer do on a Quantity grid?

They build the order row by row.

  1. They add a row from the list, for example the next color. They can remove a row they don't need.
  2. They type a quantity in each size box. The boxes on the blank row stay locked until a choice is made.
  3. The grid shows Sold out for a combination you don't have. If they type more than the stock on hand, it shows Only N available.
  4. The price summary updates from the total across the whole grid.

Variants that are not tracked for inventory, or that keep selling when out of stock, can be ordered in any quantity.

Why not let shoppers add the same item again and again?

A product page normally adds one size and one color at a time. A coach who needs a team's shirts adds the product, changes the size, adds it again, and repeats. The cart ends up with a line for every combination, and nobody can see the order as a whole.

The grid replaces that loop with one form and one Add to cart. It suits team and event apparel, size runs, wholesale case packs, and any product that comes in several sizes or colors.

How do you set up a Quantity grid?

Link a product to the calculator first, under Placement & Styling. The grid reads the Shopify options on that product. Then add the option from Options & Pricing with + Add option and choose Quantity grid.

Setting What it does
Rows The Shopify option customers add more of, such as Color. Each row is one value of it.
Columns A second Shopify option, such as Size, which gives each row a quantity box per value. Leave it on None for one quantity per row.
Starting rows and quantities The rows already on the calculator when it opens, in the order you set, with an optional starting quantity in any cell. Customers can still add, remove and change rows.
Variant added to the cart The one variant the cart line is tied to. Pick a generic one, such as Bundle, so customers don't see a size they didn't order.
Hide variants from the grid Tick whole row or column values to hide. New variants that match a hidden value stay off the grid automatically.
Hide specific variants Hide one variant when other variants with the same size or color should stay.
Minimum and maximum total quantity Optional limits on the whole order, counted across every cell. Customers see a message with how many they have.

If the product has a third Shopify option, such as Style as well as Color and Size, a synced option covers it. The calculator prompts you when an option isn't covered.

Want a Price option under the grid? It shows the live total, so the customer sees the order value as they type.

How does a Quantity grid price an order?

The grid has no price of its own. You price each piece with your normal formula and quantity discount rules, and the total of all cells is the quantity those rules see.

Take a customer who orders 24 Navy shirts and 12 White ones.

Row S M L Row total
Navy 6 12 6 24
White 0 12 0 12
Order quantity 36

The rules see 36 pieces. If your ladder has a break at 25, the whole order earns it, even though no single size or color reached 25 alone.

Mixed sizes still reach the break. Six Medium and six Large in one order count as 12 pieces. The total across every cell sets the tier.

What if one size costs more?

Use a pricing table or a choice formula when a size such as 2XL costs more. For more on building ladders, see the guide to tiered and volume pricing for custom products.

Can you set a minimum or maximum order?

Yes. Set a minimum total quantity, a maximum, or both. They count across every cell. For team jerseys you might set a minimum of 12. A coach who orders 6 Medium and 6 Large in Red and 4 Large in White has 16 pieces, and the discount for 12 or more applies to the whole order.

What lands in the cart and on the order?

One cart line. Every cell on the grid is part of it. The line lists each combination and its quantity.

Stock is taken from each variant that was ordered, and the order shows the full breakdown.

Changing the order from the cart

With Allow edit from cart on, the cart line has an Edit options button. It reopens the grid with the same quantities, so the coach who forgot two Mediums changes one box and updates the line. Our guide on editing configured products in the cart covers the rest of that flow.

Does it work with a Product Designer?

Yes. When the same calculator has a Product Designer, you choose what the designer shows with How to display in designer: Row axis only, Column axis only, or Full grid. Apparel usually keeps color in the designer and the size quantities on the calculator, so the customer designs on one color at a time.

The minimum and maximum message in the designer updates as quantities change. Adding a row in the designer unlocks that row's quantity boxes. Read more about the Product Designer, or see how it works on a shirt in the bulk T-shirt order breakdown.

Which products fit a Quantity grid?

  • Team jerseys. Rows are Color, columns are Size, with a minimum total of 12.
  • Wholesale case packs. Rows are Flavor and columns are None, so each row is one quantity of that flavor. Set the cart variant to a generic Bundle so checkout isn't tied to one flavor.
  • Size runs. One row per color and one box per size, so a buyer fills a full run on one page.
  • Event apparel. Sizes and colors for a whole group, then Edit options when the headcount changes.
